The Last of Us was a fan-favorite series from the moment it hit HBO (and it was a fan-favorite video game before that). Season 1 of the show, although there were some fan complaints about casting and other details, proved to be incredibly popular, and anticipation for season 2 was high. Granted, those who played the video game were already well aware of where the narrative was going.

Based on the video game, Joel was always destined to die in the second season, and the story was expected to shift its focus to Abby, the character who kills him. This change was bound to upset some viewers. However, The Last of Us has created a new, even bigger problem that could seriously impact the show’s future.

The Last of Us Season 3’s Release Schedule Is Frustrating

Despite rumors circulating online, season 3 of The Last of Us hasn’t been cancelled. Production is simply paused for the rest of June. This isn’t due to any problems with the show itself, but because the FIFA World Cup is causing disruptions in Vancouver, where filming was taking place.

As a huge fan, I’m trying to stay optimistic, but this production break has me worried about when the new season will actually come out. Honestly, we didn’t even have a firm release date before this happened, just a vague ‘sometime in 2027.’ That 2027 window is really disappointing, though. It means waiting two whole years between seasons two and three, and this season was already facing a lot of challenges getting made. It’s just adding to the problems, and honestly, it’s a little frustrating as a viewer.

Season 3 Was Already Going to Have One Obvious Problem

Beyond the two-year wait between seasons 2 and 3, the show faced a significant hurdle: the loss of Joel, a fan favorite character played by Pedro Pascal. While flashbacks might include him, Joel won’t likely play a major role in future seasons after his death in season 2.

Many viewers who were primarily interested in Pedro Pascal’s performance as Joel will likely stop watching, which isn’t a reflection of the show’s quality, but it’s something the show has to accept. Adding to this challenge is the divided reaction to the character Abby. While some fans enjoyed her storyline, others disliked the casting or, understandably, are reluctant to see the show center around someone who caused so much pain to Joel.

Abby’s actions have a complex backstory that many viewers aren’t fully aware of. However, Joel’s death was very disturbing, and it’s understandable why some people might stop watching the show because of it. Combined with the delayed release date, these issues could seriously threaten the future of the series.

Can Season 3 Still Recover?

Although some fans are disappointed with the current situation surrounding The Last of Us, there’s still reason to be optimistic. History shows that audiences often come back to shows even after significant delays – Bridgerton and Stranger Things are great examples. It’s likely the same will happen with The Last of Us, with viewers returning despite the wait for season 3.

This also applies to how many people will watch the show. While some viewers might stop tuning in now that Pedro Pascal is no longer the main actor, many will be too interested in the story’s direction to miss season 3. Right now, we’re just waiting to see when the new season will come out and how audiences will react.
