Ryan Reynolds Details Hospitalization After Being Hit by Drunk Driver

Ryan Reynolds is reflecting on a harrowing injury.

Ryan Reynolds, known for playing Deadpool, shared that he spent four weeks in the hospital in the 1990s after being struck by a drunk driver.

Ryan Reynolds recently shared a story about when he was 18 years old. In a video for GQ with his Welcome to Wrexham co-star, Rob McElhenney, Reynolds explained that after having a beer at a bar, he decided not to drive, even the short distance home. He remembered looking at his car and thinking, ‘I’m not driving anywhere,’ not even four blocks.

And though the 49-year-old made what he called a “firmly positive and wise decision,” disaster still struck.

He remembered turning to walk across the street when he was hit by a driver who was under the influence of alcohol.

As a result of the accident, Reynolds noted he “broke every bone in my left side.”

“He hit me so hard,” he continued, “his car was not operational.”

This wasn’t the first time Ryan Reynolds—who has four children, James (11), Inez (9), Betty (6), and Olin (3), with his wife Blake Lively—had discussed the difficult experience.

“I woke up three days later,” he shared in a 2011 interview with CTV News, per New York Daily News, explaining how his late dad James Reynolds was sitting in his hospital room with a “vomit tray.”

He went on to explain that he’d been sick in his sleep. Then, with a strange turn, he said that, to him, there’s nothing more loving than covering someone in his vomit – specifically, after soaking a deck of cards in gin for three days.

Reynolds hasn’t been himself since what happened, describing himself as feeling completely shattered and unstable.

Still, the Emmy winner has insisted on doing his own stunts through the years.

“I really like physicality in movies,” Reynolds told Variety in 2022. “I think it’s important to do as much of it yourself as you can. But I’ll step aside when there’s something that’s just too gnarly and there’s a trained professional ready to go.”

And that’s because age has admittedly forced him to slightly pull back.

Reynolds joked that you shouldn’t take pain medication like it’s breakfast. He explained that as he’s gotten older, things that used to be funny—like falling on concrete—now just really hurt. He said turning 35 marked a turning point where those kinds of experiences went from amusing to awful.

He explained that just a few weeks or a month prior, he was able to squat 295 pounds, but now he can’t even do a squat, struggles with single-leg balance, and feels unsteady – comparing it to the feeling of having a stroke.

But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, “We’re on the mend.”

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, surprisingly, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffier” during interviews, people online began commenting, and doctors even chimed in, suggesting she might have Cushing syndrome – a condition often caused by high cortisol levels or steroid injections. This prompted Amy to realize she’d been receiving steroid injections after a breast reduction and C-section. She wouldn’t have known about the condition without the online comments. Thankfully, doctors determined Amy has a type of Cushing syndrome that will resolve on its own, and she’s now happy and healthy. She shared this positive news in a February 2024 newsletter, calling it the “greatest news imaginable.”

“Justin was like, ‘Are you OK?'” the Rhode skincare mogul shared a month later on YouTube, “and I just didn’t respond because I wasn’t sure. And then he asked me again and when I went to respond, I couldn’t speak. The right side of my face started drooping. I couldn’t get a sentence out.”

While Hailey said the facial drooping stopped and her speech came back, she went to the hospital to make sure she was OK.

“They did some scans and they were able to see that I had suffered a small blood clot to my brain,” the model added, “which they labeled and categorized as something called a TIA [Transient Ischemic Attack].”

Later, Hailey went to the University of California, Los Angeles, where she found out she had a hole in her heart called a patent foramen ovale (PFO).

She explained the blood clot had traveled into her heart, “escaped” through the hole and went to her brain, leading to the TIA.

Hailey said she had a successful PFO closure procedure and was now feeling great.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the rest of his Justice World Tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained the condition affected the nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also mentioned it became increasingly difficult to eat.

Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away. Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well, calling the situation scary and random, but expressing gratitude that he was going to be okay.

Jamie Foxx recently shared details about the health scare he experienced in April 2023, which he had initially kept private. In his 2024 Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, he explained that he was suffering from a severe headache when he suddenly lost consciousness. He doesn’t remember the next 20 days.

Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, was worried and took him to the hospital. There, doctors discovered he had a brain bleed that caused a stroke.

After surgery, Jamie woke up in a wheelchair on May 4th, unable to walk. He then went to Chicago for extensive rehabilitation and therapy. He expressed his gratitude for the prayers he received, saying he needed them all.

The reality TV star said she briefly stopped breathing while running in the first challenge of the NBC competition show, describing it as feeling like she ‘died’.

She shared on the show Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser that her memory of the event was fragmented. She recalled hearing a helicopter, feeling like she was floating, and then seeing her grandfather. After that, everything went dark, but she then experienced light, leading her to realize she had died that day.

She explained that her organs were failing. She hadn’t known she had rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the body essentially begins to shut down.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, revealed a harrowing health battle in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker. While filming the series, she experienced a severe headache while at the gym, which quickly escalated. She described becoming violently ill and realizing something was seriously wrong with her brain.

A hospital scan revealed she had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage – a life-threatening stroke caused by bleeding around the brain – due to a ruptured aneurysm. She immediately underwent surgery to repair it, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she experienced aphasia, leaving her unable to speak coherently.

Although the aphasia eventually passed and she was discharged after a month, a 2013 scan revealed the aneurysm had doubled in size, requiring a second surgery. This surgery was unsuccessful, leading to a massive bleed and a dire prognosis. Doctors had to perform a more invasive procedure, accessing her brain directly through her skull.

Fortunately, Emilia reports she has now made a full recovery and is doing well.

In January 2024, Cori suffered a stroke and immediately reached out to her loved ones, sending a text and photo to let them know what happened. She told TopMob News that everyone quickly came to her aid.

Cori ended up staying in the hospital longer than expected due to other health issues. In addition to recovering from the stroke, she was also dealing with lupus and kidney problems.

Fortunately, Cori is now recovering well. She says she’s feeling great and has been working to regain some motor skills, but is otherwise doing fine.

Shailene Woodley struggled with serious health issues throughout her early twenties. In a September 2024 podcast interview, she described a time when she was losing her hearing, unable to walk for more than a few minutes without needing to rest for hours, and experiencing constant stomach pain. Doctors offered various diagnoses, leaving her feeling confused.

Determined to find answers, Woodley, who prefers to keep her specific condition private, combined traditional medical care with holistic and herbal remedies. This search for well-being lasted for ten years.

The physical discomfort led to deeper issues, including fear of food and struggles with body image, identity, and feeling safe in her own body. However, after focusing on both her physical and mental health, Woodley is now doing much better. She shared that the issues have resolved themselves and she is very healthy and happy.
