However, Holland now says he’s reconsidered, telling GQ he’s not sure why he made that statement originally, suggesting it might have been a way to influence contract negotiations.

However, Tom Holland has a clear advantage over Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield: he’s played the role for a longer period. Excluding Spider-Man: No Way Home, Maguire starred as Peter Parker in three movies over six years, while Garfield appeared in two films across three years.
When Brand New Day comes out, Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will have been in seven movies over eleven years, and Tom Holland suggests he’ll be in many more. Because of this, audiences have seen Peter grow up on screen. He started as a teenager navigating high school, but the trailers show him facing the challenges of adult life now.
This evolution was technically present in previous live-action iterations, as Peter was meant to be a teenager in Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, but those films did not focus nearly as much on the high school setting. Further, Maguire and Garfield were already in their mid to late 20s when they started playing Peter, so they did not visibly age nearly as much as Holland.
Spider-Man’s Trajectory in the MCU Matches the Comics
It’s tricky to pinpoint Peter Parker’s exact age in Marvel comics due to the shifting timeline, but he started as a young teenager when he first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15. Today, he’s usually shown as an adult. Readers connected with Peter because they spent so much time following his adventures, and many kids grew up alongside the character.
Comic book Peter Parker seems to have stopped aging, which isn’t connecting with newer readers. However, if the actor continues playing him in the Marvel movies, the character will eventually need to age. This could mean seeing him start a family or even step down from being Spider-Man.
Tom Holland has expressed interest in eventually handing over the role of Spider-Man to someone like Miles Morales, a possibility hinted at by the appearance of Aaron Davis in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
