It has been reported that six-part thriller series The Girlfriend, which was released on Prime Video, will be getting a follow-up titled The Boyfriend.
The show originally featured Olivia Cooke, known from House of the Dragon, Robin Wright from House of Cards, and Laurie Davidson of The Other Bennet Sister. It premiered in September 2025 and quickly gained over 25 million views.
Now, Deadline has reported that Amazon MGM Studios is developing The Boyfriend, which will be an entirely standalone story, with new characters based around themes of masculinity.
Negotiations with writers are still underway, and as of now, no one has been officially confirmed for the project, according to Deadline.
Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment when approached by the publication.

The Girlfriend was based on Michelle Frances’s novel of the same name, with the synopsis saying that it follows Laura (Wright), a woman who seemingly has it all: “a glittering career, a loving husband, and her precious son, Daniel.”
Laura’s seemingly ideal life starts to fall apart when her husband, Daniel, introduces her to his new girlfriend, Cherry. Laura immediately feels uneasy and suspects Cherry is hiding something. Is Cherry intentionally trying to take over, or is Laura simply letting her fears get the best of her? The story suggests that the truth depends on how you look at it.

Wright said she was drawn to the role of Laura because she appreciated the story’s focus on women and thought the show had a lot of potential for drama.
“We were initially looking at other actresses to play Laura, but schedules didn’t work out and I ended up taking the part myself.
“The role resonated for me in so many ways, not least because I have a son [32-year-old actor Hopper Penn, with former husband Sean Penn] and I can understand why Laura feels so protective towards her child.”
