Batman has no shortage of incredible storylines that put the Caped Crusader in a dark and gritty light, particularly in alternate universe tales. From Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns to Zack Snyder’s Absolute Batman, DC Comics has no shortage of tales that portray the brutality and mental anguish of Batmen from across the multiverse. However, after three years of delays and lost publicity, the Dark Knight’s most underrated series in recent years, Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham, has reached its climactic conclusion with the release of issue #4. Written and illustrated by Rafael Grampá, the finale of this epic Black Label storyline offers one of the most nuanced and vicious depictions of the Dark Knight.

When DC Comics first announced the Black Label series, it generated a lot of excitement, with extensive advertising and even animated trailers for the comic and its initial issues. However, because Rafael Grampá was solely responsible for both the writing and artwork, the release schedule extended over three years with significant delays. Ultimately, both DC and readers seemed to lose interest. Despite this, Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham deserves more attention for its strong conclusion, which effectively captures the core themes of the series: identity, anger, societal injustice, and the cycle of violence.

A Batman Defined by Rage and Brutality

The comic series Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham takes place in a dark and corrupt version of Gotham City. The story centers around a young Batman contemplating abandoning his Bruce Wayne persona entirely to dedicate himself fully to fighting crime. It explores the classic question of whether Bruce Wayne is the disguise or Batman is. From the start, the series establishes a particularly intense Batman, one who is consumed by grief and anger over the loss of his parents.

The Batman from the Gargoyle of Gotham universe is far more brutal than most versions, even rivaling the already extreme ‘Absolute Batman.’ Having little personal life to keep him balanced, this Batman has fully embraced vengeance and rarely shows restraint. His origin story exemplifies this: immediately after his parents’ murder, he found Joe Chill and brutally attacked him with a nightstick, leaving him permanently paralyzed. As an adult, this Batman frequently beats criminals nearly to death, uses weapons like hammers, and is willing to kill. He’s a character who has almost completely lost his humanity.

It’s easy to understand why Batman would struggle in this story, considering the incredibly disturbing new villains Grampá introduced, like Crytoon, Little Joker, Moth-er, Doctorgeist, and the secret society, Stadtgeist. These are arguably the most twisted and violent enemies Batman has ever faced. Doctorgeist and Stadtgeist represent the core ideas of the series: they believe people should embrace their darkest instincts and ‘cleanse’ Gotham through a massive, destructive event. While Bruce was in Arkham Asylum, members of Stadtgeist tried to make him succumb to this darkness, but even they couldn’t handle its power. Instead of being consumed by it, Batman harnessed that darkness and used it to become who he is.

Doctorgeist and his Stadtgeist society represent what would happen if Batman fully gave in to his darkness and thirst for vengeance. Like Batman, they believe that violence and surrendering to one’s worst impulses will make Gotham better, when all it really does is hurt the poor and aid the wealthy. This is best shown by how the villains are manipulated by Gotham’s wealthy elite, the Concordia Club, to carry out this purge to further the Club’s scheme to rid the city of its impoverished populace. The Stadtgeist society shows why Batman must never allow his hatred and grief to fully consume him, as it will ultimately do more harm than good for Gotham.

The Power of Batman and Bruce Wayne

The fourth issue of Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham ends with a powerful conclusion, offering a fresh take on Batman and Bruce Wayne and how they impact Gotham City. After years of letting darkness consume him, Batman finally recognizes his harmful patterns and changes course. When Doctorgeist’s followers begin a violent takeover, Batman unites the forgotten people of Gotham to fight back. Though the battle leaves the city damaged and the Concordia Club gains control, Batman’s newfound clarity makes him a formidable opponent to their plans.

Following a devastating battle for Gotham that claimed thousands of lives, Batman and his allies successfully defeated the army of the Stadtgeist. Demonstrating a newfound compassion, Batman overcame his own inner demons and even rescued Doctorgeist from a fatal blow by the villain Crytoon. He then took three young vigilantes, known as the Ratz, under his wing, and together they began operating as a modern-day Robin Hood, stealing from the city’s criminal elite to help those in need. Batman himself has adopted a particularly striking and intimidating new costume – a gothic, vampire-inspired design complete with massive mechanical wings – signaling his unwavering commitment to punishing the corrupt in Gotham.

More importantly, Batman not only decides to re-embrace his Bruce Wayne identity, but uses it to further help Gotham and defeat the Concordia Club. Naturally, he begins using his own wealth to help the impoverished of Gotham. He also gives more funding to Arkham to help rehabilitate traumatized kids so that they don’t go down a similar path as he did. However, the biggest surprise occurs when Bruce joins the Concordia Club. Bruce uses his status as a member of Gotham’s one percent to infiltrate and dismantle the city’s most powerful and corrupt organization from the inside. It’s a brilliant strategy that few versions of Batman have implemented before. Bruce Wayne is no longer just a civilian identity; he’s the Dark Knight’s greatest weapon in taking down Gotham’s elite.

The conclusion of Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham is a dramatic showdown that explores the core of Batman’s dual identity – both the symbol and the man, Bruce Wayne. Ultimately, Batman learns to harness both sides of himself, recognizing that unchecked anger could undermine his goal of improving Gotham City. Much like the gargoyles that watch over the city, Batman is a mysterious and imposing guardian, fiercely protecting its people.
