The Last of Us season 3 casts The Batman star amid big update on HBO hit’s production

The World Cup is causing a temporary pause in filming for HBO’s The Last of Us. The global football tournament led to a scheduled break in production for the series.

Because the show is filmed in Vancouver – a host city for this year’s World Cup – production on season three has been temporarily put on hold.

Great news! Production is expected to resume in about a month, and Peter Sarsgaard has joined the cast for season 3.

I just read on Deadline that Michael Sarsgaard is joining the cast! Apparently, he’s going to play a character named Amon, who leads a group called the Seraphites. What’s really interesting is that Amon isn’t in the original games the show is based on, so it sounds like they’re really shaking things up and giving fans something totally unexpected. I’m definitely intrigued to see how this plays out!

Craig Mazin, now the lead creative force behind the show, has hinted that season 3 will reveal more details about both the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and the Seraphites.

Even though viewers met both groups of characters in season 2, there’s still a lot they don’t know. According to co-creator Craig Mazin, this was intentional. He explained that important details are still to come, promising fans will eventually get the full story.

The Seraphites are a religious group led by a single prophet, and they’ve been fighting the WLF for control of Seattle for nearly ten years by the time we encounter them in season 2. Because of this long and complex history, there’s still a lot we don’t know about them.

We’re still unsure exactly how Peter Sarsgaard’s character, Amon, will fit into the story, but since he’s a leader, he’ll likely be a key player.

Stellan Skarsgård is known for taking on challenging parts in movies like Orphan, The Batman, and The Bride. He’s also received praise for his television work in series such as Dopesick, Presumed Innocent, and DTF St. Louis.

Variety reports that Li Jun Li, known for her role in Sinners, will be appearing in season 3 of The Last of Us. She’ll play Miriam, a member of the Seraphites and the mother of Lev and Yara.

Michelle Mao will play Yara, and Kyriana Kratter will play her brother, Lev. These two characters have a significant encounter with Abby during the story.

The new season is anticipated to arrive in 2027, and fans are eagerly awaiting its release, particularly after some significant changes to the production team. Neil Druckmann, a co-creator and former showrunner, has left the series, and Craig Mazin is now leading the show on his own.

When Neil Druckmann left, Mazin shared that working with him to adapt his incredible work for HBO had been a dream come true. He described Druckmann as a wonderfully collaborative partner and, as a longtime fan of Naughty Dog and Druckmann’s games, expressed his eagerness to play Druckmann’s next video game.

I’ll keep working with our amazing cast and crew to make the show our viewers love, while he handles that aspect. We’re thankful to Neil and Halley Gross for letting us tell the story of The Last of Us Part II, and we appreciate the millions of people who watch.
