Disclosure Day ending explained: What is revealed about the aliens?

Look, whenever Steven Spielberg releases a new film, everyone sits up and takes notice – he’s earned that! But this one felt especially exciting. It’s a big summer movie, and it sees him revisiting something he does brilliantly: stories about aliens. As a long-time fan, I was definitely intrigued.

The new film, Disclosure Day, premiered in theaters this week and has generally received good reviews, including a three-star rating from us. It features Josh O’Connor as Daniel Kellner, a man who risks everything to reveal that his company is hiding evidence of extraterrestrial life.

I was completely captivated by the way his journey led him to meet Emily Blunt’s character, Margaret Fairchild. She’s a TV weather presenter, and honestly, she was so intriguing! She started acting strangely after a bizarre encounter with this incredibly vivid red cardinal – something clearly otherworldly – and it drew her right to him. It was a fascinating connection!

When they begin working together, Daniel and his colleague find themselves pursued by the Wardex Corporation, a company run by the suspicious Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth). The situation becomes more dangerous as they uncover how deeply connected they are to each other.

So, you’re probably wondering how the story wraps up and what we finally learn about the aliens, right? I’m going to break it all down for you, but be warned – major spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen ‘Disclosure Day’ yet!

Disclosure Day ending explained: Why were Daniel and Margaret linked?

It doesn’t take long before we find out the truly dark side of Wardex. Through Daniel, we learn they’ve been capturing and torturing aliens, running horrific experiments to try and weaponize their incredible technology. It’s a grim reveal that immediately raises the stakes and paints Wardex as truly ruthless.

This is a key reason why Daniel wants everyone to know about aliens, and equally, why Noah and his team are determined to stop him, no matter what.

While still being pursued, Daniel and Margaret finally meet Hugo Wakefield (Colman Domingo), the head of a group of people who deserted Wardex like they did, and who has been urgently trying to find them.

We quickly learn the explanation for the strange connection between Daniel and Margaret, and why they’ve struggled to remember things.

Hugo built a perfect copy of Margaret’s childhood home, helping her unlock forgotten memories. Through this, she finally remembers that she and Daniel were both kidnapped by aliens when they were children and given special abilities.

Seeing the red cardinal – the most recent in a lifelong pattern of animals she suspected were actually disguised aliens – had unexpectedly unlocked her hidden abilities, allowing her to suddenly read thoughts and influence people’s actions.

What is revealed about the aliens in Disclosure Day?

Now armed with this information and aided by technology from another world, Margaret, Daniel, and their team manage to evade Noah’s efforts to shut them down. They successfully infiltrate Margaret’s TV studio and share their discoveries with everyone.

People around the world are now seeing incredible proof – videos documenting interactions with aliens starting with the famous Roswell incident in 1947. This evidence also shows how governments tried to hide these encounters and conducted experiments on the alien beings themselves.

The news had an instant and massive effect, captivating everyone’s attention. It also appears to have averted a war that was about to begin.

After revealing the video, the whistleblowers had one final, dramatic reveal: they presented one of the aliens they’d rescued from Wardex.

The creature shares information with Daniel, and he relays it to Margaret. The movie then frustratingly cuts to black right before Margaret can tell someone what she learned, ending on her single word: “Listen.”

Screenwriter David Koepp shared in an interview with Den of Geek that this particular line was actually the very last thing he wrote in his initial draft of the screenplay.

While I was writing, I anticipated she would look directly at the camera. I added dialogue, starting with a single word that felt particularly meaningful for the scene.

Okay, so this character is basically telling someone to really hear what’s being said. The guy who’s been traveling through space just dropped some knowledge on me, and she’s emphasizing that everyone needs to listen – not just to her, but to each other. It’s the whole point of the movie, honestly: connection and understanding.

The director explained the film’s lack of specifics about the message itself, or how people reacted after it was revealed, by saying that the story focuses on the information simply getting out. From the start, the audience knows this information is crucial, and the film concludes with its release.

So, that’s how your story goes. Once you started down this path, there would be no turning back. If the film were titled ‘Disclosure Day and the Following Week,’ you’d realize you have a lot to account for. However, our story has reached its conclusion, and it’s time to finish it.

What happens now depends on how people react to the news about extraterrestrial life. Will this discovery ultimately improve humanity, or simply cause more conflict? Your personal outlook will probably shape how you see things.
