As a huge fantasy fan, I still remember being blown away by Roger Zelazny’s Nine Princes in Amber when it came out in 1970. It really changed things up! That book started this incredible ten-book series called The Chronicles of Amber, and the premise is just mind-bending. You follow a prince who wakes up on Earth with no memory, only to find out our world is just a shadow of Amber – which is the real world, the center of everything. He and his siblings are immortal and can jump between endless parallel universes, caught in this huge family feud that’s been going on for centuries over who gets to rule. Zelazny cleverly split the story into two parts: five books about the original prince, and then another five focusing on his son. It’s a really intricate world he built, full of fascinating mythology, and it’s definitely inspired so many fantasy writers since then – it’s become a cornerstone of the genre for good reason.
Despite being incredibly popular and influential, The Chronicles of Amber hasn’t yet been adapted into a live-action TV series – a surprising omission in the entertainment world. A series was first announced back in 2016 by Skybound Entertainment and Vincent Newman Entertainment, but there was no news for years. Things seemed to change in January 2023 when Stephen Colbert joined as an executive producer. George R.R. Martin, a longtime fan and friend of the author Roger Zelazny, has also been a strong advocate for a TV adaptation. Unfortunately, as of 2026, the project has stalled again, and currently doesn’t have a showrunner, writers, or a network to call home.

Another key element, the Pattern – a cosmic maze characters must navigate while suffering intense pain – also poses a problem. Studios seem to be finding it hard to bring these abstract concepts to life visually.
Adapting The Chronicles of Amber for television presents significant challenges beyond just creating impressive visuals. The story isn’t told in a way that fits typical TV pacing. Zelazny’s novels are deeply personal, experienced entirely through the thoughts, memories, and reflections of the main characters. This makes it complex because the political conflicts between immortal siblings happen across countless dimensions and over vast stretches of time – unlike shows like Game of Thrones which focus on a single location. Any screenwriter trying to bring these books to life faces a tough decision: stay true to the intricate story and risk confusing viewers with its philosophical nature and unreliable storytelling, or simplify it into a standard fantasy adventure and lose what made the original novels so special.
