The Spring 2026 anime season is wrapping up, but the upcoming Summer season looks fantastic! 2026 has been a great year for anime fans, bringing back popular shows like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 and Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, along with several exciting new series such as Witch Hat Atelier and Daemons of the Shadow Realm. As always, Crunchyroll will be adding many new shows and streaming episodes weekly shortly after they air in Japan. The Summer anime season begins in July, with almost all series premiering and becoming available on the platform then.
The streaming service will announce its summer 2026 lineup before the end of June, detailing which shows will be available, when they’ll be released, and in which regions. One of the most anticipated series, Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You, will premiere in July, though special episodes were already released on June 3rd. The first six episodes of the anime were remade into 12 shorter episodes and initially aired on the Japanese TV channel ABEMA. Crunchyroll quickly began streaming these mini-episodes, giving fans a chance to watch this popular romance anime early.
What Is Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You About?
I’ve been following this anime, and it’s adapted from a really popular manga by Jinushi. It actually started as a webcomic on what was then Twitter – back in March 2022! Soon after, Square Enix began publishing it in their Monthly Big Gangan magazine in July of the same year. The story is about Sasaki, an everyday office worker who’s completely worn out by his job. He finds a little joy in life just watching Yamada, a lovely young woman who works at his local 24-hour supermarket; her smile really brightens his day.
After constantly being scolded at work, Sasaki would often visit the supermarket hoping to see Yamada, a cashier he admired. One particularly tough day, he went to the store only to learn her shift was over. Disappointed, he went outside for a cigarette when Tayama unexpectedly approached him and invited herself to join him. Unlike the kind and gentle Yamada, Tayama is confident and playful, and she quickly realizes Sasaki is interested in Yamada. Sasaki enjoys seeing Yamada at the store, but he’s also intrigued by the enigmatic Tayama.
As a surprising romance develops, he discovers the link between the two women. The series currently has eight volumes, with six translated into English and available on the Square Enix website. Volume 7’s English translation will be released on July 7, 2026, and is available for pre-order now.
