Mike Hopkins, head of Amazon MGM Studios, has discussed the plans for the next James Bond film. He stated that the filmmakers are working to ensure the character feels fresh and appealing to modern audiences.
In a recent interview on Variety’s Strictly Business podcast, Mike Hopkins, who leads Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, discussed the future of the James Bond franchise. This came after Amazon bought MGM and began making changes to the team working on the next Bond film, Bond 26.
Hopkins explained that the James Bond franchise was a key reason Amazon wanted to acquire MGM. He emphasized its importance to their decision-making process.
The upcoming James Bond movie will be the first installment in the series after Daniel Craig finished his run as 007 with ‘No Time to Die’ in 2021, and producers have begun looking for a new actor to take on the role.
Hopkins said the first step had been to assemble the right creative team for the new era.
He said the initial decision was to recruit the most talented people available to work on the next James Bond film, marking a fresh start for the series.
We’ve assembled a fantastic storytelling team, including Denis, Amy, David Heyman, and Steven Knight, to work on the script.

Denis Villeneuve, known for directing movies like Dune and Arrival, will be directing the new James Bond film. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing it, and the screenplay is being written by Steven Knight, who created Peaky Blinders.
According to Hopkins, a new James Bond film isn’t happening anytime soon. The studio is still figuring out the future direction of the character and planning how Bond will be portrayed in upcoming movies.
We’re also working on how to evolve James Bond for the future, ensuring the character remains appealing to audiences for years to come. There’s still a significant amount of development needed to achieve that.
“We’re sort of in the bottom half of the first inning of bringing this to life.”
Amazon MGM Studios has started looking for the next James Bond, but hasn’t revealed any information about the new actor or when the next film will be released. They also won’t be sharing details about who is being considered for the role during the search.
Even though Prime Video is involved, Hopkins emphasized that James Bond films will still primarily be released in theaters.
He emphasized their strong commitment to releasing films in theaters, particularly for this franchise. He added that he fully expects James Bond movies will continue to have a theatrical release moving forward, and would be surprised if they didn’t.
The upcoming film signals a major shift in how James Bond movies are made. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, who’ve guided the franchise since 1995 (continuing a family legacy), have agreed to let Amazon MGM Studios lead creative decisions. While they still own part of the Bond rights, they’re no longer directly involved in day-to-day filmmaking, allowing Amazon to reimagine the series for the big screen.
