A beloved role-playing game originally released for PlayStation in 2001 is getting a modern update later this year. Even though the PlayStation 2 was already available at that time, the PS1 still saw some fantastic game releases, including popular titles like Dragon Quest VII, Syphon Filter 3, Final Fantasy Chronicles, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3. Now, what many consider to be one of the best PS1 games from that period is set to return on today’s gaming systems.
Bandai Namco announced this week that they’re planning a remastered version of Tales of Eternia for release in 2026. Originally launched in Japan for PlayStation in 2000, it came to North America in 2001. While the game was also released on PSP in 2005 and 2006, that version wasn’t available in the US. Now, Bandai Namco is revisiting this classic RPG to give it a modern overhaul with several improvements.
Get ready for Tales of Eternia Remastered, launching October 16th on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC! Bandai Namco is giving the classic RPG a visual upgrade, but you’ll also be able to switch back to the original graphics whenever you like. The remaster includes new features too, like a high-speed mode, the option to replay battles, and an extra challenging ‘Extreme’ difficulty setting.
Tales of Eternia is the newest game in Bandai Namco’s popular RPG series to get a remastered version for today’s gaming systems. Bandai Namco has been updating older titles like Tales of Graces f, Tales of Xillia, and Tales of Berseria over the last couple of years. Now, most of the Tales games are available on modern platforms – which is great news for both longtime fans and new players.
If the current pattern holds true, we might see a remastered version of Tales of Destiny – the only other game in the series originally released on PlayStation 1 besides Tales of Eternia. However, if Bandai Namco decides to do this, it probably won’t be available until around 2027.
