Crunchyroll May Be Losing The Most Anticipated Shonen Jump Anime

Crunchyroll is currently the world’s biggest streaming service dedicated to anime. It quickly became popular after launching in 2017, offering a huge library of anime series and movies you won’t find on other platforms. With each new anime season, Crunchyroll adds fresh lineups and streams episodes weekly, with options for subtitles or dubbing depending on your region. Because so many seasonal favorites are available there, it’s become a go-to resource for anime fans to discover and enjoy more shows.

You can find many popular anime series on Crunchyroll, including hits like Dragon Ball, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Demon Slayer – even though these shows often become available on other streaming platforms later. However, there’s a chance the new Shonen Jump anime, Kagurabachi, won’t be released on Crunchyroll.

Kagurabachi Is Likely to Stream on Netflix

In December 2024, Netflix Japan’s official X (formerly Twitter) account created a buzz in the anime world with a strong suggestion that anime adaptations of Kagurabachi and Akane-banashi are coming to the platform. They posted a trailer called “With Friends, Jump Anime, and Netflix,” and the accompanying message highlighted the wide variety of Jump anime available on Netflix, including both classic favorites and new releases.

The trailer showed quick clips from popular anime already available on the platform, including One Piece, Sakamoto Days, My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Blue Box. What surprised everyone was the inclusion of panels from Kagurabachi and Akane-banashi. At the time, neither of these manga had announced an anime adaptation, so fans immediately started speculating about potential new series.

Just as many predicted, Akane-banashi premiered on Netflix instead of Crunchyroll after its release this spring. It looks like Kagurabachi may follow suit and skip Crunchyroll as well. The same is true for The World Is Dancing, another anime from the same studio, which will be available only on HIDIVE. While we haven’t gotten many details about the Kagurabachi adaptation yet, most people believe it won’t be on Crunchyroll either.

What Is Kagurabachi About?

Takeru Hokazono created the popular manga series Kagurabachi, which blends urban settings with fantasy elements. It started appearing in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in September 2023 and is still being released. An anime adaptation is planned for next year, and it’s expected to be a hit based on how well-loved the manga already is.

The story follows Chihiro Rokuhira, a young man seeking revenge for his father’s murder. Three years after the tragedy, he sets out to track down those responsible and recover the stolen family heirlooms – a set of famous swords.

The manga finished its initial story arc in February and immediately began a second part with a new storyline just a week after. The first part of the manga was made up of three different arcs, and the ‘Sword Bearer Assassination’ arc was the most extensive one yet.
