Screenwriter David Koepp recently discussed the future of the Jurassic World series, specifically a potential sequel sometimes referred to as Jurassic World Rebirth. He explained to ScreenRant that while Universal is working on another film, a major hurdle remains: no one has yet found a way to convincingly and realistically continue the story from a scientific standpoint.
What Could Happen Next in the Jurassic World Franchise?
David Koepp explains that calling Jurassic World Rebirth the beginning of a new trilogy isn’t the right approach. He believes the focus should be on making each film excellent on its own. “Instead of planning a trilogy, we need to make one great movie, then figure out how to make the next one just as good,” Koepp said. He feels the Jurassic Park series had become too expansive and that Rebirth aimed to recapture the magic by limiting the scope and making the dinosaurs feel special again.
Screenwriter David Koepp explained that limiting the action in Jurassic World: Dominion to a single location has created a challenge for future installments. He stated they can’t move forward with another movie until they figure out how to expand the story beyond this confined setting. He pointed out that the original Jurassic Park began on a single island designed as a tourist attraction, and the story only grew when a dinosaur escaped to the mainland. The Jurassic World films broadened the scope dramatically, with dinosaurs appearing worldwide. Dominion intentionally scaled things back, returning to the more focused setting of the first film.
Following the events where dinosaurs roamed the Earth, the story explained they couldn’t survive the current climate and were moved to protected areas near the equator. In Jurassic World Rebirth, a team ventures into these zones to collect dinosaur DNA, hoping to develop groundbreaking medicine. Predictably, a greedy pharmaceutical company complicates matters with unethical behavior. Ultimately, the team makes the DNA publicly available, allowing anyone to use it for research and ending the narrative.
The future of the series is uncertain. This film didn’t begin a new story arc; it simply introduced a new group of characters. But without a developed storyline to build on this world, a sequel is currently on hold, as writer David Koepp explained.
