House of the Dragon Season 3’s Big King Aegon & Aemond Targaryen Change Explained by Star [Exclusive]

Okay, fellow fantasy nerds, get ready! It feels like we’re heading into a huge summer for epic fantasy – some are even calling it ‘Hot Dragon Summer’! And it’s not hard to see why, especially with the third season of House of the Dragon dropping on June 21st. From what the cast and crew have hinted at, this season is going to be massive – bigger battles, bolder moves, and definitely more bloodshed. Now, the king – or should I say, the guy claiming to be king – is finally giving us a peek into what he’s planning for Season 3. It’s getting good!

Fans of George R.R. Martin’s book series have already pointed out that the show is diverging from the original story, and Season 3 continues this pattern. In a trailer for the new season, Aegon says he’ll either kill his brother or die trying – a line that doesn’t appear in the book Fire & Blood. Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays King Aegon II Targaryen, recently spoke with ComicBook about where his character’s head is at, along with Harry Collett, who plays Prince Jacaerys Velaryon.

Aegon Is Here For His Revenge This Season

Aegon is driven by a desire for revenge after being hurt and betrayed. When asked if he prioritizes getting back at Aemond – who left him for dead after a battle that killed their aunt, Rhaenys, and her dragon – over claiming the Iron Throne, Glynn Carney chuckled and explained that Aegon has many competing priorities in Season 3. He’s focused on multiple things at once, and personally, Aegon feels more deeply offended by Aemond’s actions than by any conflict with Rhaenyra.

I found the discussion of Aegon’s motivations particularly insightful. The actor really highlighted how Aegon feels entitled to honor and glory, but interestingly, he suggested Rhaenyra actually surpasses Aemond in that regard. It’s fascinating because they both pursue revenge with such unwavering focus, yet their approaches are distinctly different – two sides of the same determined coin, if you will.

Viewers can expect a very different Aegon than they’ve seen before. He’s no longer the insecure, pampered prince from the show’s early seasons or the book. This new Aegon is far more assertive and willing to take risks, which will create even higher stakes in the conflicts to come. This includes his rivalry with his half-sister, Rhaenyra, who many consider the true heir to the throne, and his tense relationship with his brother, Aemond. After briefly disappearing with Larys Strong to regroup and avoid potential attacks, Aegon will return as a more formidable player.

Everyone – both within the story and among fans – is anxiously waiting to see how this new direction will unfold on screen in the coming weeks. Whatever happens, it’s going to be a major moment.
