Hollywood is known for its special effects makeup studios, and Rick Baker is widely considered the most accomplished, having won seven Oscars. However, he’s been retired for several years now. Currently, the largest of these studios is KNB FX, founded by Howard Berger (the ‘B’ in KNB), Robert Kurtzman (‘K’), and Greg Nicotero (‘N’). Greg Nicoterro even has an Oscar himself, awarded for his work on the movie version of ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. We’ve been lucky enough to speak with Howard extensively about his career, particularly KNB FX’s involvement in every film directed by Quentin Tarantino so far.
This special effects company has created the famously graphic visuals – like scalping, severed ears, exploding heads, and plucked-out eyeballs – for every Quentin Tarantino film. However, Howard explained how their collaboration began even before Tarantino started directing, and how it launched both of their careers. It’s obvious the company enjoys working with Tarantino, who consistently earns the loyalty of everyone on set.
Howard Berger shares the story of how KNB FX and Quentin Tarantino first connected – even before the film Reservoir Dogs – revealing the unexpected beginnings of their successful partnership and the incredible work they went on to create.
