Onimusha: Way of the Sword Promises Robust Console Graphics Modes, While PC Leans on Upscaling

After being quietly available for some time, the free demo of Onimusha: Way of the Sword has become incredibly popular with over a million downloads, bringing renewed attention to the game and setting Capcom up for a successful year. If you’re deciding where to play, official details about resolution and frame rates on each platform are now available.

As a gamer, I’ve been checking out how this game runs on the new consoles. On both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, you can choose between two modes: ‘Performance’ gets you a smooth 60 frames per second at an upscaled 4K resolution, while ‘Quality’ aims for a sharper picture at around 30-40 FPS. If you’re playing on the more affordable Xbox Series S, it targets 60 FPS at an upscaled 1080p in Performance mode and 30-50 FPS with better graphics. Just so you know, even in Performance mode, the frame rate can sometimes dip depending on what’s happening on screen.

The next Nintendo Switch will likely display games in upscaled 1080p when connected to a TV and upscaled 900p in handheld mode. Both modes typically run at 30 frames per second, but you’ll have the option to enable a variable framerate which can boost performance up to 40 FPS.

Okay, so I’ve been checking out the PC requirements for this game, and it looks like you need at least an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 processor, plus 16GB of RAM, and a GeForce GTX 1660 (with 6GB VRAM) or Radeon RX 5500 XT (8GB). But honestly, with those specs you’ll only get around 30 frames per second on the lowest settings. If I really want to max it out – Ultra graphics at 2160p and a smooth 60 FPS – they recommend an Intel Core i5-12400 or Ryzen 7 5700, and something like an RTX 4070 Ti (12GB) or Radeon RX 7900 XT (with a whopping 20GB of VRAM). Sounds pretty demanding, but hopefully worth it for the visuals!

These performance tests were done with DLSS 4.0 or FSR 3.1 turned on, and you might still experience occasional slowdowns in demanding scenes. While Nvidia DLSS 4.5 can boost performance even further, it doesn’t work with FSR 4.0.

The game Onimusha: Way of the Sword comes out on September 25th, which gives the developers a little more time to polish and improve it. We’ll share any further updates before the launch date.
