I know not everyone will agree, but as someone who enjoys racing games, I feel like they haven’t been very exciting lately.
It’s tough to really criticize modern racing cars. If you consider how they’ve developed over the past decade, they are generally exceptionally well-engineered and perform at a high level.
I think racing games have become a little predictable lately. Many of the popular titles are either highly realistic simulations or open-world games filled with officially licensed cars.
Essentially, this game feels like it falls into the same category as popular racing titles like Assetto Corsa, Gran Turismo 7, or Forza Horizon. Many high-quality racing games share similar characteristics.
These are all excellent games, and I don’t want to criticize them. They all do exactly what they’re designed to do, and people clearly enjoy them.
I’m starting to feel a little bored with racing games that all feel pretty much the same. While I’m sure Forza Horizon 6 is great, I’m finding it hard to get hyped for it on PS5. I have a good idea of what to expect, and honestly, it feels like I’ve already played it, even though I haven’t.
Thank goodness, then, that racing games are starting to diversify again.
Things feel different lately – there’s been a subtle change over the past few years that I really appreciate.
Hot Wheels Unleashed feels like a breakthrough – it’s one of the first popular racing games to fully embrace pure arcade fun instead of trying to be realistic. Both this game and its sequel are fast-paced and wonderfully chaotic, and that’s exactly what makes them so enjoyable.
Recently, we’ve seen some interesting racing games on PS5. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a solid kart racer, while Wreckreation, though ambitious in its blend of Burnout and Trackmania styles, didn’t quite hit the mark. However, Screamer stands out as a genuinely unique and captivating racing experience – the most interesting I’ve played in a long time.
Looking at the racing and driving games on the horizon actually makes me optimistic about where the genre is headed.
Clutch is a free-roaming racing game created by the team behind Forza Horizon, and it feels very much like their previous work. What’s exciting is that it’s also attempting something new – blending a large open world with a story focused on characters, and adding fun, over-the-top gadgets like a grappling hook. I really appreciate those unique elements.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer feels like a blend of some classic racing games – it’s fast-paced, competitive, and features exciting stunts similar to MotorStorm, Burnout, and WipEout. It’s rare to find newer racers that capture that same energy.
Stuntman: Hollywood isn’t a traditional racing game, but it offers a unique and thrilling driving experience thanks to its over-the-top action and collection of famous movie cars.
Crazy Taxi: World Tour brings back the classic arcade game with updated graphics and gameplay, letting a new generation experience its fast-paced, chaotic driving and simple, exciting goals.
As a Hot Wheels fan, I’m really excited about Infinite Rush! It’s building on the awesome foundation of the Unleashed games, but now it’s taking things to a whole new level with a massive open world. What’s really cool is that even with this change, it still feels like Hot Wheels, with that signature toy-based look and how the cars handle – it’s totally unique!
I’m excited about these new developments because they introduce fresh ideas that have been missing from this type of story for a while.
Look, I totally get why people love realistic racing sims like those, or even something fun and open-world like Forza Horizon – I’ve had a blast with them myself! But honestly? I’m really excited that we’re starting to see more variety in the racing game scene. It’s great!
We’d love to hear what you think about the new racing games coming out! Share your opinions in the comments.
