A classic anime series from the ‘Isekai’ genre – where characters are transported to another world – is making a surprising return after 20 years! Isekai shows are incredibly popular right now, with many long-running hits and new ones appearing every season. These earlier releases were especially important in shaping the common themes and ideas we see in Isekai anime today.
Noboru Yamaguchi and Eiji Usatsuka’s The Familiar of Zero is a popular example of the ‘Isekai’ genre. While it wasn’t the very first Isekai anime, appearing in July 2006, it significantly influenced many similar series that followed in the 2000s and 2010s. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, a special event has been announced, and you can see a commemorative image below.
The Familiar of Zero Returns With New Project for 20th Anniversary

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the anime Familiar of Zero is holding special events in Japan! The main event will be an exhibition starting this August featuring over 100 illustrations showcasing beloved characters and iconic scenes from the series. Several original voice actors are also expected to participate.
Visitors to the exhibition can enjoy a special audio guide with voice actors Rie Kugimiya (Louise) and Satoshi Hino (Saito). Exclusive merchandise will also be available, and won’t be sold anywhere else. Currently, there are no plans to hold this 20th anniversary celebration outside of Japan, and the original series is difficult to find.
What Happened to The Familiar of Zero?

The Familiar of Zero was a popular anime series that ran for four seasons, successfully completing its storyline. The story begins when Saito, an ordinary boy, is accidentally summoned to a magical world by Louise, a clumsy witch. Because of her poor magic skills, Saito becomes her familiar – essentially a magical servant – which makes them both the target of jokes and mockery. This setup would become a common trope in other anime series later on.
After it finished airing, the show faded somewhat into nostalgia for those who originally watched it. Over the past decade, many other similar shows have come out, overshadowing this one. It’s also hard to watch now – while the final season is available on HIDIVE, the first three seasons are no longer streaming anywhere.
