Love Island USA Producer James Barker Dead After Medical Emergency

The crew behind Love Island is mourning the loss of one of their own. 

James Barker, who has been a producer on the show since 2020, passed away at age 40 after a sudden medical issue while filming in Fiji. ITV America and Peacock announced his death on June 15th.

James’s sudden death has been profoundly felt by everyone involved with Love Island USA, as well as by ITV and Peacock. He was a much-loved and respected part of our team, and his kindness, skill, and commitment will be remembered by all who knew and worked with him.

The network expressed its deepest sympathy to James’s partner, family, friends, and coworkers.

Barker began working on Love Island in 2020 as a story producer and later became an executive producer before the start of season four. The show will pay tribute to him in the episode airing on June 16th.

And throughout working on it, Barker had shared how much the series meant to him. 

Shortly after the US version of Love Island premiered in June 2025, Barker shared on Instagram that she immediately wanted to join the show. Six years later, she expressed her excitement over the show’s success – with @loveislandusa reaching impressive viewership numbers – and said she loves her job more than ever. She celebrated this achievement with both the current and former teams involved in making the show a hit.

Before appearing on Love Island as a contestant, Barker began his television career in 2011 with Leftfield Pictures. He worked as a producer on popular shows like Counting Cars, Pawn Stars, and Forged in Fire. Later, he contributed to Queer Eye and eventually became an executive producer for multiple seasons of both Love Island and Love Island Games.

Beyond his passion for reality TV, Barker was also a DJ. He is survived by his partner, Adam Roth. ITV America and Peacock shared that music was central to the life the couple built together, both at home and while traveling the world.
