The latest armchair detective …
Agatha Christie is famous for her mystery novels featuring detectives like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and now a new whodunit aims to follow in her footsteps. ‘A Murder Between Friends’ introduces Francesca Carlyle (played by Joan Collins), the presenter of a true crime show, who rents out her large European home as a vacation spot. Six old university friends – a mix of British and American couples – gather there for a weekend: Devin and Sonia, Josh and Kat, and Loisa with her new husband Sydney, who is newly part of the group.
What is the murder between friends?
When a body is discovered in the hot tub – and it’s clear Michael Barrymore wasn’t present – the residents turn to Ms. Carlyle, who lives elsewhere on the estate, to solve the mystery. As with any good whodunit, everyone is a suspect, and hidden relationships begin to surface, like a secret encounter between two men on the stairs. However, the clues are scarce, making it difficult for viewers to guess the killer or understand their reasons until the very end, when the motives are finally revealed.
Worth investigating?
Most murder mysteries stretch believability, but this one feels completely detached from reality. There’s no police investigation, no forensic evidence, and no mention of an autopsy – despite a death occurring. The TV detective’s attempts to solve the crime are made pointless by the sudden appearance of extensive CCTV footage that instantly reveals the killer. The reveal feels as flimsy as a Scooby-Doo episode and carries about as much weight as a ‘Best Before’ date. When a character says, ‘It’s not what it looks like!’ viewers are likely to think, ‘Actually, it’s exactly what it looks like – another predictable murder mystery.’
“A Murder by Friends” feels like a classic, cozy mystery made for daytime television. The main appeal is definitely seeing Joan Collins – though she’s only in a few scenes and spends most of them seated! While the plot isn’t believable, it’s enjoyably silly, and the hint that her character, Francesca Carlyle, might return leaves you wondering if that’s good news or not.
I’m excited to share that “A Murder Between Friends” will be available digitally on June 15th, 2026! You’ll be able to find it on all the major platforms like Amazon, Apple TV, Sky Store, Virgin Movies, Google/YouTube Movies, and Rakuten. Plaion Pictures is releasing it, and I can’t wait to watch it!
We chat to Toby-Alexander Smith about the making of the film….and a bit about Eastenders too….
