5 Underrated Fox Kids Animated Shows Only ’90s Kids Will Remember

For over 35 years, Fox Kids was a staple of Saturday mornings for many children, and some great shows from that era have sadly been lost to time. While streaming has changed how kids watch TV, it’s easy to overlook the fact that they no longer have dedicated blocks of programming made just for them. That’s likely why so many people who grew up with Saturday morning cartoons still feel nostalgic about them.

Back in the 1990s, Saturday morning cartoons on Fox Kids weren’t just filled with original shows made by Fox – they also featured a lot of programs licensed from other companies, which really shaped that time period. While many of these shows became popular brands later on, there are five in particular that often get overlooked and you might not even remember unless you were watching them when they first aired.

5). Little Shop

First appearing on Fox Kids on September 7, 1991, Little Shop is an animated series based on the popular musical The Little Shop of Horrors. It features a new and humorous take on the characters Seymour and Audrey Jr. as they embark on exciting adventures. Though the show didn’t last very long and had a limited number of episodes, it remains a fondly remembered, yet largely overlooked, piece of animation history.

The show softened the violent parts of the source material and included a song in each episode meant to teach Seymour a moral. It only lasted a few months on television and isn’t available to watch online now.

4). Peter Pan & The Pirates

I remember when Fox Kids launched back on September 8, 1990, and one of the very first shows was Peter Pan & the Pirates! It was a huge hit and actually ran for a whopping 65 episodes – basically one really long season. While it took inspiration from the classic Peter Pan stories, it definitely put its own spin on things. And get this – Tim Curry voiced Captain Hook! It’s just a shame it’s become a bit of a forgotten gem, honestly.

The show probably faded into obscurity because it wasn’t particularly unique compared to other popular Fox Kids programs. Like many shows from that era, it only had a limited release on home video, and it still hasn’t been updated and released on streaming services for today’s viewers.

3). Attack of the Killer Tomatoes

I remember watching Attack of the Killer Tomatoes when Fox Kids first started – it was another cartoon based on a horror movie! Unlike Little Shop, this one actually did pretty well with young audiences, lasting for two seasons and getting replayed on TV for years. The show continued the story of the original movie, taking place years later. It followed Tara – who was often shown in a bikini, even though she was a human-tomato hybrid people thought was a teenager – as she teamed up with Chad, the nephew of the hero from the first film.

This series is really unique and quirky – you’ve probably caught an episode at some point! It was also a pioneer in using computer animation for children’s television, making it historically significant even if it’s faded from memory. Unfortunately, you can’t stream it anywhere right now.

2). Life with Louie

I remember when Fox Kids was really good at turning popular things into cartoons, and they weren’t just limited to movies! They were one of the first to try shows based on comedians, and Life with Louie was a good example. It premiered on September 2, 1995, and actually did pretty well, running for three seasons and 39 episodes. The show was based on comedian Louie Anderson’s childhood, and featured an eight-year-old version of him – voiced by Anderson himself – who just wanted to relax, watch TV, and enjoy some snacks.

The show featured a quirky family – even his father was voiced by the same actor! The main character dealt with typical kid problems like bullies and tricky situations, usually using humor to get through them. It had a calm, low-key vibe that made it perfect for winding down after watching cartoons on Fox Kids, which is probably why it’s not super memorable. Unfortunately, you can’t easily find it on streaming services today.

1). Bobby’s World

When you think about ’90s Fox Kids shows based on comedians, Bobby’s World definitely comes to mind. It was by far the most popular show of its kind and one of Fox Kids’ biggest successes overall – it ran for seven seasons with over 80 episodes! Created by Howie Mandel, who also provided some voices, the series centered around young Bobby and his family (who were hilariously ‘Generic’) as he used his imagination to see the world in wonderfully childlike ways.

This show probably stands out the most because it aired for a long time as part of the Fox Kids programming block. While it’s no longer on popular streaming services, you can still watch all the episodes officially on Kabillion’s YouTube channel.
