This storyline, which began with the reintroduction of a clone from The Amazing Spider-Man #149, dragged on for over two years. Though the initial concept was strong and yielded some great stories, Marvel didn’t know how to end it, and the saga continued long after it had run its course. However, the saga wasn’t a complete failure, as it successfully brought back Norman Osborn, the infamous Green Goblin, into Spider-Man’s world.

It also featured Mary Jane Watson suffering a miscarriage and brought Norman Osborn back into the picture.
The mastermind behind everything turned out to be Osborn, who teamed up with the Jackal to get revenge on his enemy. Osborn had secretly recovered from his fight with Spider-Man using a healing ability from the Goblin formula and spent time in Europe plotting his elaborate plan. While the Clone Saga didn’t have a perfect ending, the idea of Osborn orchestrating the whole thing to torment Spider-Man was a clever move. The saga concluded with a final confrontation between Peter, Norman, and Ben Reilly, tragically resulting in Ben’s death.
Norman Osborn’s return as the Green Goblin wasn’t an instant success. After the ‘Clone Saga,’ early stories focused more on Doctor Octopus. However, that would eventually shift. By then, a whole generation of readers had grown up without knowing Norman as the Goblin. The Hobgoblin was created to take his place (though Marvel mishandled revealing who it was, damaging the character), and Harry Osborn briefly became the Green Goblin himself. Norman had become a shadowy figure – remembered mostly as the villain responsible for Gwen Stacy’s death, a frightening presence from the past.
When Norman Osborn returned, it revitalized his character after years of being Spider-Man’s greatest enemy, opening up exciting new storytelling possibilities. He’s evolved into a major villain on par with the Avengers, but recently underwent a change – his past sins were erased, leading him to team up with Spider-Man. In fact, he even donned the Spider-Man suit himself to help protect New York City! This return allowed Osborn to become more than just a one-dimensional threat; he’s now a complex and compelling character who can fit into almost any narrative.
Green Goblin Has Reached New Heights Since His Resurrection
Back in 1995, if someone had told me Norman Osborn would return as a villain, I wouldn’t have believed them. At the time, when characters died in Marvel comics, it meant something lasting – their deaths really impacted the universe, and Osborn seemed to be one of those permanently gone figures. But his comeback thirty years ago has actually taken him to levels of notoriety nobody predicted. While everyone remembers him for Gwen Stacy’s death, he’s become a much more complex character over the last three decades.
While his return doesn’t fix the problems with the lengthy and confusing ‘Clone Saga’ storyline, it ultimately proved worthwhile. Norman Osborn’s resurrection dramatically changed Spider-Man comics and his own character, leading to unexpected developments. No one anticipated Osborn becoming a major villain who could command even Doctor Doom, or even posing as Spider-Man and befriending Peter Parker. This return allowed for exciting new directions in the Goblin’s story, making it all worthwhile.
