During a discussion about the romantic relationships on Fiji on June 13th, Pessoa was explaining her thoughts when a glitch with the green screen caused her hand and wrist to briefly vanish from the screen.

A viewer noticed some inconsistencies while watching the show and wondered if Tefi and Ciara were actually filmed together. They commented on social media, pointing out that it seemed like they weren’t in the same location during filming, adding that this season felt disjointed.

One user agreed with the critique, suggesting, “The editing is so weird this season.”

A viewer noticed a potential editing mistake involving contestant Trinity Tatum, who is currently paired with Bryce Dettloff. They pointed out that during an elimination, the show repeatedly used clips of Trinity crying, even in moments when she wasn’t actually crying during filming.

Every day, the show collects hours of footage from 85 hidden cameras, and editors carefully select the best moments to create a one-hour episode.

That’s just their process: editors work with footage from one day and quickly finish the next episode, and they repeat this cycle constantly.

Fortunately, the show is filmed in Fiji, which is 16 hours ahead of the East Coast. This means that even when the team finishes work late at night, it’s still morning in the U.S., giving them more time to perfect each new episode.

According to executive producer Claudine Parrish, as soon as something happens on the island, the production team immediately starts building scenes around it. For example, if the boys make breakfast for the girls, within fifteen minutes, editors are already working to turn that moment into a scene for the show, labeling it accordingly.

Creating these stories requires a large team effort. Parrish explained that around 30 editors and 20 producers collaborate to shape raw footage and conversations into a cohesive and compelling narrative.

As someone who spends a lot of time exploring new ideas, I’ve learned that not every fascinating concept actually pans out. Honestly, we don’t always pick winners! A big part of what I do is constantly asking myself, ‘Is this truly meaningful, or will it be old news tomorrow?’ It’s about discerning what has lasting value from what’s just a fleeting trend.

On Love Island USA, breakfast has become a surprisingly big deal! Since the male contestants are responsible for making food and coffee for everyone, viewers around the world have become really interested in what they’re serving up each morning.

But what does everyone eat for lunch and dinner, you ask?

On this show, since the cooking itself is more important than the finished meal – unless something goes really wrong like burnt pancakes or a messy first attempt – food is present, but isn’t the main attraction.

In a 2021 interview with HELLO!, Love Island UK season four winner Dani Dyer explained that there aren’t any set menus in the villa. Instead, they have catering, meaning contestants make their own breakfast – things like eggs, bacon, and toast.

During season eight of Love Island, Luca Bish wasn’t sure who prepared their meals. In a July 2023 TikTok video, he explained that a ‘mystery chef’ made the food off-site and it was then brought to the villa.

Bish didn’t enjoy most meals, often eating just hummus and chips for both lunch and dinner.

Throughout the show’s history, many participants have shared that male and female contestants generally eat meals in separate groups—the only exception being when they are on a date with each other.

Olivia Attwood, who appeared on season three of Love Island UK, described the experience of being on the show as similar to living in a boarding school. She told The Sun in 2022 that while they filmed, the producers managed everything like a school headmaster, giving reminders about chores like cleaning bedrooms, doing laundry, and even taking breakfast orders to keep things running smoothly.

And much like being on a jury, they’re not allowed to discuss the case among themselves.

Season eight contestant Samuel Agbiji explained to Closer in 2024 that being on the show was chaotic. He said contestants wanted to discuss what was happening while they were eating, but couldn’t without interrupting filming.

It’s easy to imagine contestants enjoying a few drinks to loosen up, but they’re actually limited to just one alcoholic beverage each night – and it has to be beer, wine, or sparkling wine.

In a June 2024 TikTok, Phoebe Siegel from season four of Love Island USA jokingly complained that the serving of wine she received at dinner – whether red or white – wasn’t very large.

Let me tell you, from my experience observing these situations – like when the Islanders celebrate a win in Casa Amor with what looks like an open bar? Don’t be fooled! I’ve learned the drinks are actually heavily diluted. It’s definitely not the strong stuff you might expect.

Iain Stirling has a busy job: he narrates both the UK and USA versions of Love Island, and when the shows are being filmed, he has to work very long hours.

In 2024, the comedian explained to TODAY that his days revolved around Love Island. He’d start watching the UK version around noon U.K. time – by then, it was almost over – and then spend two or three hours writing. He’d finish up around 4:30 PM, take care of his child’s dinner, bath, and bedtime routine, eat something himself, and finally tune into Love Island USA at 8:30 PM, which meant a very early start for those in Fiji.

According to The Wrap, executive producer Parrish said that Stirling reviews early versions of episodes remotely via Zoom. During these sessions, he and the writers note humorous moments or story details, recording their observations using his home microphone.

As someone who works with content creation, let me tell you, after I record my part, it goes straight to Peacock’s legal and standards team. They’re the final check, and sometimes they’ll ask for a few tweaks right before everything’s finalized – it’s just part of the process!

Stirling explained to TODAY that they usually aim to wrap up around midnight or 1 AM. He then stays awake until 2:30 or 3 AM to catch the later parts of the show for viewers in the U.S. Ideally, he’d stay up even later – until 5 or 6 AM – but that would mean getting no sleep at all.

Showing that relationships formed on the show can last, Stirling married Laura Whitmore, the host of Love Island UK, in 2020. They later had a daughter in March 2021.

He immediately thought, ‘This is fantastic, and more shows should do this,’ and decided he wanted to work on Love Island.

Choosing songs for scenes happens quickly, but a music clearance company starts the licensing process months in advance. They build up a large collection of tracks – including those by artists like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, and Olivia Rodrigo – so everything is ready to go when needed, as one professional explained.

We prepare a large number of songs – often hundreds, sometimes even thousands – because we don’t know what moments the show will need music for,” Barker said. “For example, we might have a track ready for a breakup scene, or another that’s perfect for a first kiss when that storyline appears.”

Surprisingly, the people living in the villa aren’t allowed to play music. This is partly because getting permission for the songs would be complicated, and also because music could drown out the conversations the show’s cameras and microphones need to record.

Sometimes songs can be heard naturally within the game, like during challenges, a slow-motion dance sequence, or when traveling in a taxi – for example, if the driver has the radio on.

The show provides makeup and skincare for the cast, so they always look good on camera. They’re welcome to bring their own products too, but any visible brand names will be blurred out when the episodes are edited.

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE the pampering! Lucie Dolan from Love Island UK season five told me all about it on Capital FM. She said they’d get their nails and hair done every couple of weeks while in the villa – seriously! It makes so much sense because she explained that those nights feel SO long when you’re in there, and nobody really sees how draining it is. They absolutely needed those days to just relax and recharge!

When the show isn’t filming on Saturdays, the former host, Whitmore, shared with OK! magazine that the cast members often get their eyelashes and acrylic nails touched up.

Oh my gosh, it’s amazing how much things have changed! Before, they used to send the Islanders off-location for dates and challenges, which was SO exciting! But now, producers have to keep everyone on set the whole time. It’s a bit of a bummer, honestly, because those outside adventures were always the best parts, but I guess it’s just too risky to let them wander around now during filming.

Laura Whitmore explained that in the show’s first season, contestants were allowed to leave the villa for hair appointments. Now, due to the show’s popularity, they aren’t able to leave, so a hair stylist comes to them to touch up their roots.

Producers say they’re perfectly content to ride the waves of romance.

According to Ben Thursby-Palmer, an executive producer for Love Island USA, the show reacts to what’s happening with the contestants as it unfolds. He explained to The Wrap in 2024 that if couples seem stable and happy, there’s little need to shake things up with a recoupling ceremony. However, if contestants are consistently sleeping apart and relationships are unstable, the producers will intervene to mix things up and create new pairings.

According to season nine contestant Samie Elishi in a YouTube video from April 2023, Love Island UK isn’t scripted. However, she explained that producers do encourage the islanders to talk to specific people—like their partners or those they’re feuding with—because that’s what drives the show. While they’re prompted to have these conversations, what’s actually said during those chats is entirely up to the individuals involved.

The show provides the contestants with phones to communicate – they can call, text, take pictures, and receive notifications about challenges and events that will be announced.

As a huge fan of Love Island UK, I remember Liana Isadora Van Riel from season two explaining to The Sun back in 2019 that the show gives the Islanders really simple phones. She said they mostly just use them for the dramatic ‘I’ve got a text!’ moments – nobody actually relies on them to properly communicate, it seems!

As Love Island USA contestant Kassy Siegel explained in a TikTok video, the Islanders are completely cut off from the outside world – no internet searching, television, social media, or texting friends and family.

Following in the footsteps of other reality show hosts who try to remain neutral, Ariana Madix – the host of Love Island USA – has to act like she’s not personally affected by the drama happening with the contestants.

She explained to The Wrap in 2024 that it’s challenging because she often feels the urge to participate in the conversations. However, she also recognizes her role as a host requires her to remain neutral, especially while filming.

She also spoke up when Andrea Carmona was eliminated in season six, and Rob Rausch spontaneously said he would leave the show with her. Ariana Madix calmly suggested he think it over, and he ultimately decided to stay.

Madix said she believes it’s not wise to make important decisions when you’re feeling very emotional. She also admitted she partly hoped to challenge him, as she wasn’t sure he actually meant what he said about leaving.

Madix, who stays at a hotel with a view of the villa during filming, pointed out that the islanders aren’t filmed by visible cameramen. Instead, the villa is covered with fixed cameras, and additional cameras are operated from behind sliding panels in the walls. While there aren’t any truly private areas – except for places like the bathroom or shower – the islanders might mistakenly think they’re having a confidential conversation when, in reality, everything is being recorded.

According to Elishi from Love Island UK, the kitchen pantry – where snacks are kept – is another place without cameras. In an April 2023 video, she explained that only one person can be in the pantry at a time because of a previous romantic encounter that took place there.

Okay, so I’ve been deeply researching everything about Love Island, and apparently, the producers are SO prepared! Like, they literally leave branded condoms all over the villa – everywhere! And if the Islanders need more, they just ask and get them restocked. It’s wild to think about, but honestly, it just proves how much thought goes into everything on the show. I’m obsessed with these little details!

Newcomers get a chance to catch up on everything that’s happened before they arrive and possibly change things up.

In an April 2023 episode of her podcast, Chloe vs. The World, Love Island UK contestant Chloe Burrows explained that new arrivals get to watch all episodes of the show except for the one airing right before they enter the villa. They then share their top three favorite islanders from those who are already there.

While the cameras never stop filming, the contestants do get one day off a week to just hang out.

This also means everyone needs to follow the mealtime rule: no gossip and any arguments must be put off until the following day. Plus, because they aren’t allowed to have dates on their days off, the men and women can’t share beds at night.

Kem Cetinay, a contestant on the UK version of Love Island, explained that once contestants stop recording, they’re not allowed to discuss anything related to the show. While they can chat with each other, producers carefully monitor the conversations to ensure everything is captured on camera for viewers at home. He described it as a break from the constant drama of dates and deciding who to couple up with.
