Fans of scary movies can now watch a fantastic five-movie series all in one spot. Horror has become incredibly popular, and recent films like Obsession and Backrooms were huge hits in 2026, drawing large audiences to theaters.
For many horror fans, the 1980s are considered a golden age. This decade gave us some of the most memorable characters in the genre – both heroes and terrifying villains. From classic slasher icons like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger to alien threats such as The Thing and the Killer Klowns, the 80s truly shaped modern horror.
What’s really cool about horror fans is their interest in how scary movies are made – not just the finished product. They love learning about the filmmaking process, like where the ideas came from and how special effects brought those terrifying scenes to life.
In 2019, writer and director David A. Weiner began a new documentary, fueled by his passion for the horror genre. The film brought together a variety of horror industry professionals to thoroughly explore the iconic horror films of the 1980s.
The movie was finally released as In Search of Darkness and became very popular, leading to four sequels. Two of those sequels explored horror films from the 1990s. Now, all five movies in this fantastic series are available to stream on Shudder.
Shudder Is Now The Home Of In Search Of Darkness, The Ultimate Horror Documentary Series
Since its debut in 2019, the In Search of Darkness series has earned a reputation as one of the best horror documentaries available. Each film is impressively long – between four and six hours – and uses that time to thoroughly explore both the broad impact of 1980s horror on the film industry and the details of specific movies.
The first film concentrates on popular 80s movies that most viewers will recognize. But the sequels, In Search of Darkness: Part II and In Search of Darkness: Part III, dive into lesser-known horror films from the era’s B-movie world. This offers fans both insights into the movies they already love and recommendations for new ones to discover.
I was a huge fan of In Search of Darkness, which explored horror from the ’80s, so I was thrilled when they released two new documentaries focusing on the ’90s! Both are available to stream on Shudder. What’s really cool is that instead of trying to cram everything into one film, they split the decade in half – In Search of Darkness: 1990-1994 and In Search of Darkness: 1995-1999. This gives them space to really dive deep into both well-known and super obscure movies from each part of the ’90s, which is awesome.
In Search Of Darkness Features Countless Voices From The Film Industry And YouTube
The In Search of Darkness series is popular because it features interviews with a lot of well-known horror icons. The first documentary includes big names like John Carpenter, Greg Nicotero, Kane Hodder, and many others. Each new installment builds on this by adding even more interviews, especially with people involved in lesser-known films.
The series regularly includes film experts from YouTube. Some of the most well-known contributors to the original documentary were James A. Janisse of Dead Meat, James Rolfe, known for his Angry Video Game Nerd series, and Cecil Trachtenberg from Good Bad Flicks.
As a huge horror fan, I can tell you that In Search of Darkness is a must-watch. It’s packed with amazing behind-the-scenes stories about the movies that really defined the genre for so many of us, and it’s awesome to hear other fans share their love for them too. Now that it’s available to stream on Shudder, it’s the perfect binge-worthy series, and I even discovered some older films I’d never heard of while watching!
