KPop Demon Hunters Gets A New Game (And It’s Probably Going To Be A Bestseller)

Next week marks the one-year anniversary of the popular Netflix film, KPop Demon Hunters, and to celebrate, it’s coming back to theaters for a limited time. But that’s not all – a whole line of toys and action figures is being released, and the franchise is expanding into video games! A new KPop Demon Hunters game has just been announced, and based on what we’ve seen, it’s likely to be a huge success.

We recently got a sneak peek at a new game in the KPop Demon Hunters universe, and now all the details are here! It’s called KPop Demon Hunters: Battle for the Spotlight, and it’s the latest addition to Z-Man Games’ popular Love Letter series. In this game, you’ll join either Team HUNTR/X or the Saja Boys in a battle to protect – or destroy – the Honmooon. The game will be available in October.

Everything We Know About KPop Demon Hunters: Battle for the Spotlight (And What Is Love Letter?)

In KPop Demon Hunters: Battle for the Spotlight, 2-8 players team up with either HUNTR/X or the Saja Boys to help them succeed on stage. Players use cards – drawing and playing one each turn – and their enthusiastic support creates ‘fan energy.’ This energy powers the performance and shields the Honmoon from harm. Success depends on teamwork and paying close attention to what’s happening during the show, and each character brings unique abilities to help you do just that.

I’m so excited about the character abilities in this game! Each character from the movie has a special power that can really help your team. So far, we know about Fans – these let you send a card to a teammate’s discard pile, and the more Fans they have there, the stronger your final card becomes! Then there’s Bobby, who lets you try and guess the value of another player’s card. If you guess right, they have to shuffle that card back into the deck and draw a new one. It’s a really cool way to mess with your opponents!

Let’s look at the HUNTR/X characters. Zoey (6) lets you peek at a teammate’s hand or the backstage card. If either card is a 5 or higher, you gain momentum and move closer to your side. Mira (7) forces another player to discard their hand and draw a new one. If the discarded card was a Saja Boy, you also get some momentum. Lastly, Rumi (8) gives you a Cheer Token right away if your team has already discarded 4 or more HUNTR/X cards.

The Saja Boys also have unique powers, but they’re similar to those of HUNTR/X. Jinu, for example, has an ability that works like Rumi’s, except it’s triggered by having Saja Boys cards in your discard pile. We haven’t seen what Mystery and Abby can do yet, but Romance (3) lets you secretly peek at the backstage card and trade it for one in your hand. Baby (5) allows you to target another player and look at their hand. If they’re holding a card with a value of 5 or higher, the Saja Boys gain momentum, and you can place a card from your hand onto the top of your deck.

As a big fan of card games, a lot of what’s happening here reminded me of Love Letter. If you haven’t played that one before, it’s a really neat game where you’re trying to get your love letter to the Princess before your opponent does. The cool thing is, you only ever hold two cards, so you’re constantly trying to guess what your opponent has and figure out how to win the round – either by having the Princess card yourself, or by playing a card with a higher value than theirs!

While the game seems simple at first, opponents can sometimes figure out which card you have, forcing you to think quickly and change your strategy each turn. It’s all about being flexible, bluffing effectively, and now Z-Man is combining this gameplay with the world of KPop Demon Hunters! Based on how popular previous crossovers like Star Wars and Batman have been, this new version is expected to be very successful, so it’s worth looking out for when it’s released.
