A highly-rated Square Enix role-playing game is currently available at no cost to some players. While Square Enix creates many types of games, they’re most famous for their RPGs like Dragon Quest, NieR, and especially Final Fantasy. They’ve consistently released top-tier RPGs for years, with several considered all-time greats. Free copies of these games are rare, so this is a great opportunity.
PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro owners who subscribe to PS Plus Extra or Premium can now download Final Fantasy XVI at no extra cost. Originally released as a PS5 exclusive in 2023 with a $70 price tag, it’s a fantastic deal for players to get it free around three years later. While it’s unknown exactly how long the game will remain available through PlayStation Plus, it will likely be available for 12 to 24 months, based on past offers. It’s unlikely to be available for less than 12 months.
One of 2023’s Best Games With Lots of Content
When Final Fantasy XVI came out three years ago, critics loved it, giving it an 87 score. It was also nominated for four awards at The Game Awards – Best Story, Best RPG, Best Performance, and Best Music – and actually won the award for Best Score and Music. Beyond its quality, the game offers a substantial amount of content.
Finishing the main story of this Square Enix RPG usually takes between 35 and 40 hours. If you explore optional side quests, that playtime increases to around 60 hours. Players who aim to complete everything will likely spend 80 to 85 hours in the game, which was originally a PlayStation 5 exclusive. These estimates don’t include starting new games, but even so, there isn’t a strong incentive to replay it.
As a huge Final Fantasy fan, I get asked if this game still holds up in 2026, and the answer is absolutely! It’s great because you don’t need to have played anything else to enjoy it – it’s a complete story on its own. Plus, Final Fantasy 17 is still a long way off, so this is still the newest main game in the series, and that won’t change anytime soon. Honestly, we haven’t even heard anything about the next one yet! And three years isn’t that long in gaming – it’s still one of the best modern Final Fantasy titles, and I don’t see that changing for a good while.
Just wanted to say, I’m really open to hearing your thoughts! Feel free to drop a comment and let me know what you think. Or, if you’re into discussing RPGs and video games like I am, come hang out with us on the ComicBook Forum – we have some great conversations going on over there!
