In 2012, Disney purchased Lucasfilm – including the Star Wars franchise – from George Lucas for $4.05 billion. Lucas was looking to retire from filmmaking and pursue his interest in opening a museum. He’s since shared that he foresaw the rise of streaming services and realized he didn’t have the expertise to navigate this changing industry. Before selling to Disney, Lucas had already developed plans for a new Star Wars trilogy, which were included in the sale, allowing him to move forward with his other projects.
Despite selling Lucasfilm to Disney, George Lucas still owns the land where much of the Star Wars magic happened. Matthew Wood, a sound editor and the voice of General Grievous, shared at Spacecon 2026 (as reported by The Popverse) that Lucas built a beautiful studio complex about 40 minutes north of San Francisco, near wine country. Remarkably, he’s donated 90% of the land to be preserved as open space, ensuring it will never be developed.
Interestingly, since Disney now owns Star Wars, I ended up working for them too. But we actually work at Skywalker Ranch, and we pay George Lucas rent – he owns the property. He’s happy to have us there, as he’s a filmmaker and enjoys having a working film location on his land.
George Lucas Will Never Fully Let Star Wars Go
It’s amazing that George Lucas continues to have a hand in Star Wars, even today. He’s still credited on shows like The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Jon Favreau shared that Lucas even contributed ideas for the character of Grogu (Baby Yoda). Lucas suggested Grogu would naturally build a mud hut, implying this behavior is instinctive to his species. This detail sparked a lot of humorous discussion among Star Wars fans about how difficult it must have been for Yoda to live in the city-like environment of Coruscant.
George Lucas has successfully built the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which is scheduled to open on September 22, 2026. Though he’s stepped back from filmmaking, Lucas remains passionate about the art of storytelling, and this museum is a project he’s dreamed of for years. The museum, meant to be “a home for the art that connects us,” will include exhibits dedicated to Star Wars, as well as the classic science fiction and fantasy that originally inspired it. Lucas made a rare appearance at San Diego Comic-Con last year to promote the museum, and he’s expected to do more promotion as the opening date approaches.
Honestly, what I’m really curious about is whether George Lucas will be part of the big Star Wars 50th anniversary next year. They’re bringing the original A New Hope back to cinemas, and everyone’s getting the vibe that George actually approved that. He’s celebrated Empire Strikes Back anniversaries before, but this is a much bigger deal. Plus, his old student Dave Filoni is now running Lucasfilm alongside others, and they talk all the time. It’s kinda funny to picture them brainstorming Star Wars ideas one minute, and then discussing property management the next!
George Lucas originally envisioned Skywalker Ranch as a peaceful escape for filmmakers – a place to find inspiration, not necessarily a main office for Lucasfilm. He personally designed the ranch, sketching out all the plans, and it became a symbol of his creative freedom. It’s fitting that he retained ownership, probably wanting to keep the ranch separate from the typical Hollywood scene. Interestingly, this also means he continues to receive payments from Lucasfilm even though he sold the company over ten years ago.
