Fans of Studio Ghibli have a lot to look forward to! The beloved film Kiki’s Delivery Service, which has an impressive 98% rating, is being adapted into a live-action TV series nearly 40 years after the original movie came out. Variety reports that BBC Studios Kids & Family is partnering with Wheel in Motion (from the UK) and Kadokawa Corporation (from Japan) to create the series. It will consist of ten 30-minute episodes, drawing from the first book in Eiko Kadono’s novel series, and will be released to celebrate the book’s 40th anniversary.
No release date has been announced for the new adaptation yet, but it has the potential to tell a more complete story than the Studio Ghibli film by utilizing the other five books in the series. Author Eiko Kadono has expressed her excitement, saying, “Kiki is embarking on a new journey into a different world. I believe this will be a wonderful show, and I’m eager to see it come to life.”
While this isn’t the first attempt at a live-action adaptation of Kiki’s Delivery Service – a 2014 film directed by Takashi Shimizu already existed – it wasn’t well-received and has largely been forgotten. This new project is unusual because it will be based on the original book, not directly recreating the Studio Ghibli animated movie. This approach makes a live-action version possible without being a simple remake.
This is a developing story…
