The video game industry is bracing for a difficult summer, with major companies like Sony and Microsoft expected to close down several game development studios.
Reputable French journalist Sylvain Trinel reported this on social media following the recent issues with Xbox.
According to Trinel, the recent news about potential closures affecting multiple Xbox game developers is likely just the start of much bigger problems for studios owned by larger publishing companies.
He points to examples of French game developers such as Don’t Nod and Quantic Dream, and then predicts that many other prominent studios will likely announce layoffs soon.
Recent news indicates that game developers Don’t Nod and Quantic Dream are both experiencing significant financial difficulties. Don’t Nod is actively looking for investment to continue working on its current game, while Quantic Dream is struggling with problems throughout its development process.
“It’s going to be a catastrophe,” Trinel continues.
He continued by mentioning several game development companies – id Software, Bethesda, and BioWare – suggesting he’s heard concerning things about their current situations. He believes these issues are likely to worsen before they get better, stating this is only the start of a larger trend.
So, I was reading what Trinel said, and if their info is right, things could get really rough for game developers over here in the West. It sounds like we might see a lot of studios downsizing or even closing down completely. Honestly, it’s pretty worrying!
What’s happening with Sony? Despite owning many highly successful game development studios, it seems like they’re still facing challenges.
When asked about Bungie and their multiplayer game Marathon, Trinel hinted that something might happen in July, though not necessarily related to the specific studios people are discussing.
This post has quickly gotten PlayStation fans talking, with many wondering about the future of studios like Media Molecule (known for Dreams) and Bend Studio (Days Gone). People are pointing to their relative silence during the PS5’s lifespan as a possible reason for speculation.
It remains to be seen if Trinel’s predictions are accurate, but things could very well get significantly harder for the gaming industry before they improve.
