As a critic, I’ve always been fascinated by the clashes between Deadpool and the Punisher, and Marvel’s just announced what sounds like their most significant showdown yet. It’s no surprise fans love this pairing – both are heavily armed antiheroes who favor lethal solutions, but they’re total opposites. Frank Castle sees Deadpool as reckless and unpredictable, while Deadpool… well, he doesn’t really think much of anything. The Punisher is a brilliant strategist, but Deadpool’s ability to heal makes him almost impossible to take down.
Marvel has officially announced that the Punisher and Deadpool will face off again in a four-part story called “Big Guns.” This crossover event begins this September, appearing in both the Wade Wilson: Deadpool comic by Benjamin Percy and Geoff Shaw, and the Punisher comic by Benjamin Percy and José Luis Soares.
According to writer Si Spurrier, bringing together The Punisher and Deadpool—two very different characters who operate on the streets—felt inevitable. He promises a chaotic and action-packed story, featuring a revamped classic villain and the debut of the ‘Merc-mobile,’ a high-tech mobile headquarters he’s particularly enthusiastic about. He also hints at a new weapon that will significantly impact the main Marvel universe. Despite the animosity between Frank Castle and Wade Wilson, the creative team of Geoff Shaw and José Luis work together seamlessly, bringing the story to life with incredible artistry.

Big Guns Promises to be the Biggest Brawl Yet

It’s been nine years since Deadpool and the Punisher last clashed. Marvel says their next encounter begins when one of Deadpool’s mishaps draws the Punisher’s attention, right as Deadpool is about to start a very important mission. Since Benjamin Percy writes both comic series, now is the ideal time for them to team up! Marvel promises this fight will have lasting effects on both characters – likely emotional consequences for Deadpool, considering his ability to heal from any injury.
Marvel is marking June 16th as “616 Day” – a celebration similar to Star Wars’ May the 4th. Their recent hints about “changing 616 forever” initially seemed like typical marketing, but it might actually mean something big is happening in the comics. While it doesn’t necessarily point to a story with huge multiversal consequences, the close connection between the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) makes it possible. With Avengers: Doomsday – a key film in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga – on the horizon, it’s understandable that Marvel Comics is excited about exploring different dimensions, especially considering Deadpool’s history with them.

The biggest mystery is who the main villain will be. It sounds like a familiar Marvel baddie will be getting a makeover, but they probably won’t last long – they’re stuck in the middle of a fight between Deadpool and Marvel’s deadliest killer, so their chances aren’t good. I’ve always thought it was interesting when these characters have repeat villains, and that’s even more complicated now that Deadpool and the killer are facing off. We’ll have to see if the story follows the usual comic book pattern of a first fight followed by the heroes teaming up, but honestly, it might be more fun if they just keep working against each other.
Get ready for a darkly funny and violent ride! In the current Punisher storyline, Frank Castle is being rebuilt after brain experiments, making him more complex and unpredictable than ever before – he might even do things the old Punisher wouldn’t. And Deadpool? He’s going to become a twisted reflection of the Punisher, complete with his own ridiculous vehicle to match the Punisher’s Battle Van. With all this setup, the jokes practically tell themselves, making this four-issue story incredibly appealing.
