Gothic 1 Remake: Lockpicking Guide

The Gothic 1 Remake features a uniquely challenging lockpicking system found in few modern RPGs. You unlock doors and chests by carefully adjusting five plates, but each plate influences the others, making it surprisingly difficult and time-consuming – unless you invest in lockpicking skills. This guide will cover everything you need to know about mastering this mini-game in Gothic 1 Remake.

How to Lockpick in Gothic 1 Remake

In Gothic 1 Remake, you’ll need to play a mini-game to open locked chests and doors. This mini-game features five lock plates, each with seven holes. You need to carefully position each plate so the pins pop up correctly. To successfully pick the lock, you must get all five plates into the center position.

This mini-game is challenging because most of the plates are linked – moving one will affect others. Only a single plate can be moved independently. The key to success is to stabilize the first plate, preventing any movement by adjusting the others. Then, work your way through the remaining plates one by one. Be careful not to push the pins too close to the edges, as this will cause the lock to rattle and potentially break your lockpick. Adjust different plates to get the desired plate into position before moving on. It’s best to save the independent plate for last, as you can easily place it without worrying about affecting the others.

TIP: Always manually save before attempting to open a locked door or chest.

How to Become a Trained Lockpicker in Gothic 1 Remake

To improve your lockpicking skills in Gothic 1 Remake, you’ll need to learn from Fingers, the lockpicking trainer, who can be found in the Old Camp. First, talk to Diego, and he’ll send you to Fingers. Fingers will ask you to retrieve a ring from a locked chest, starting the quest “A Ring for Fingers.” Once you’ve opened the chest and gotten the ring, return to Fingers, and he’ll agree to teach you lockpicking. This training costs 10 skill points and 100 ore nuggets.

Upon improving the lockpicking skill, the following effects will be active for you.

  • Breaking a pick does not does not reset your progress on a lock.
  • You can make up to four mistakes before breaking a pick.
  • Reduces lock complexity by removing a connection between two pieces.

Fingers can also teach you how to pickpocket. These stealth skills make it easier to steal valuable items.
