Gundam’s Owners Might Be in Trouble, According to New Report

The popular anime series Mobile Suit Gundam made a comeback in theaters earlier this year, continuing the story of Hathaway’s Flash and revisiting the world established after the original war between Amuro and Char. With plans for even more anime projects, including a remastered version of the classic 1970s series, Gundam has a lot to look forward to. However, Bandai Namco Filmworks, the studio behind the anime, is facing some financial difficulties with both Gundam and its other franchises.

Bandai Namco Filmworks recently shared its yearly financial results, and the news wasn’t great. Profits for the company, particularly for the Gundam franchise, dropped by 43.8% over the past year, going from approximately $29 million to $20.5 million. While these figures don’t reflect Bandai Namco’s overall performance (which is much stronger), the report doesn’t explain the reason for this decrease. You can find the full financial report here.

What Happened to Bandai Namco Filmworks?

Although we don’t know exactly why net profits have decreased, we can look at Bandai Namco Filmworks’ recent releases for some clues. Last year saw popular series like Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, One Punch Man Season 3, and a remake of Ronin Warriors. Beyond TV shows, they also released films including That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime The Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, and three Star Blazers movies. Many fans believe the anime releases for the 2024-2025 fiscal year are even more significant.

Bandai Namco Filmworks had a strong year with popular TV shows like season three of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, season two of Blue Lock, Gundam: Requiem For Vengeance, and the new Code Geass sequel, Roze of the Recapture. They also released several movies, including Blue Lock The Movie, a revival of Star Blazers, and various Gundam films. Although profits decreased significantly in percentage terms, the actual dollar amount lost (around $8 to $9 million USD) isn’t a major concern long-term. Bandai Namco Filmworks plans to continue focusing on its most successful anime series, so it will be interesting to see how they perform in their next financial report in 2027.
