Saros Developer’s Next Title “Might Not Be At That Scale,” As It’s Grown to Nearly 120 Staff

Housemarque might not be the first game studio people think of when discussing success stories, but it’s been around since 1995 and has consistently created fun, arcade-inspired games. They recently gained a lot of positive attention for Saros, which came out on PS5 last April, though it hasn’t immediately become a massive commercial hit.

Mikael Haveri, the brand director, expressed confidence about the game’s performance, though he didn’t share specific sales numbers. He told The Game Business that Returnal experienced a slower start, with the community discovering its appeal over time. This initial excitement among dedicated players then spread, attracting wider interest.

Ilari Kuittinen, the head of the studio and co-founder, acknowledges that Saros still needs development. He says this is just the beginning of a conversation with players, and those who have played the game already know there’s plenty of room for improvement, additions, and adjustments. They plan to continue working on Saros for the foreseeable future.

It’s notable how much the studio has grown – from around 40-50 employees when they released Nex Machina in 2017, to nearly 120 today. According to Kuittinen, working on one game at a time with such a large team is a significant shift. The studio has had to adapt to creating these larger, more ambitious experiences and find effective ways to organize the work. They’ve also been successful in hiring people who share their design philosophy and vision.

Right now, the studio is concentrating on Saros and getting feedback from players about its development. They’re also starting to plan for future projects, considering smaller-scale ideas alongside potential large-scale ones. They’re eager to explore many possibilities and will determine what’s feasible.

With news surfacing about potential risks to several Xbox studios – like Ninja Theory, Double Fine, Arkane, and Compulsion Games – it’s understandable to be worried about Housemarque too. According to Alinea Analytics, their game Saros sold around 406,000 copies, bringing in approximately $30 million in revenue. It’s uncertain how long the game will continue to receive updates, particularly if Sony prefers the studio focus on a more affordable project, but only time will tell what happens next.
