Netflix Reportedly Considering Merger With Lionsgate, Studio Behind John Wick and Hunger Games Movies

There was a time when most people expected Netflix to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, which would have significantly expanded Netflix’s presence in the movie business. That deal fell through, but now Netflix is reportedly considering a merger with Lionsgate, the studio behind popular franchises like John Wick and The Hunger Games.

A source told Semafor that Netflix is considering buying Lionsgate Studios, but hasn’t made a formal offer yet (according to What’s On Netflix). Previous attempts by Warner Bros. Discovery and Roku to purchase Lionsgate failed. Adding Lionsgate’s content library, channels, and brand would significantly strengthen Netflix’s position.

Everything Netflix Would Get In A Lionsgate Merger

A merger between Netflix and Lionsgate Studios could significantly benefit Netflix in both the near and long term. The most immediate advantage would be a much larger and more diverse content library, including current and future movies and TV shows from Lionsgate.

If Netflix were to acquire Lionsgate, it would gain access to popular and ongoing movie and TV series franchises like John Wick, The Hunger Games, Saw, Now You See Me, and the recent hit The Housemaid, which already has a sequel in the works. Plus, Lionsgate has other franchises, including The Twilight Saga and Divergent, that are either being revived or could be in the future, and that’s just looking at their film properties.

Lionsgate produces many well-known TV series like Nashville, Mad Men, The Royals, Weeds, and the popular Power universe of shows (currently on Starz). If Netflix were to acquire Lionsgate, it would gain access to all these programs, plus potentially the entire Starz network itself – creating new opportunities for content and growth.

This merger would also bring the Lionsgate Entertainment World theme park into the fold. Located in Zhuhai, China, this park offers immersive experiences with rides and attractions based on popular Lionsgate films like The Hunger Games, The Twilight Saga, Gods of Egypt, and Escape Plan, among others.

Netflix is already exploring live experiences with ventures like Netflix House, and acquiring a company like Topgolf would allow them to creatively use their popular shows and movies. While it’s not certain if this will happen – Netflix is known for making smart business decisions – it could be a very promising move for them.
