Get ready to return to the world of Shrek! DreamWorks has released a first look at Shrek 5, showing an all-grown-up Shrek and his family, including his daughter Felicia (voiced by Zendaya). While the new characters are exciting, fans are especially loving the familiar songs featured in the teaser trailer – they’re bringing back lots of nostalgic feelings!
Even though the movie isn’t coming out until June 2027, the brief scenes showing the characters in jail are already a hit – especially Eddie Murphy as Donkey expressing his emotions through music from the 1970s.
This series has always been known for creatively reimagining popular songs, and the latest trailer proves they still excel at it. We’ve analyzed every musical highlight from the teaser, and here’s our ranking, starting with the very best.
3. “Do You Want To Build A Snowman?” (Parody)
The crew stumbles into trouble after walking down a gloomy alleyway, where they encounter a bizarre, melting snowman. This scene playfully mocks Disney’s Frozen with a line asking Donkey, “You wanna date a snowman?” It’s a quick parody of the popular 2013 song “Do You Want To Build A Snowman?”, proving the writers haven’t lost their knack for good-naturedly teasing other animated films.
2. “Baby Come Back” by Player
After the family finds themselves in jail, the atmosphere inside their cell becomes incredibly tense. Shrek is clearly upset, and Donkey tries to lighten the mood by doing what he does best – singing! He begins with a short, gentle verse from Player’s hit song “Baby Come Back,” released in 1977. It’s a surprisingly funny and perfect choice for the situation, fitting right into the familiar, smooth ‘70s soft rock sound that’s often featured in Shrek movies.
1. “Roxanne” by The Police
This scene is sure to be a highlight for viewers. Donkey seamlessly transitions from a cheerful 70s song to a more emotional vibe, launching into the opening lines of The Police’s “Roxanne” – and he’s doing it while stuck in a dungeon! This perfectly captures the nostalgic 70s/80s rock feel that made the original films so popular, and it sets the ideal mood for their comeback in 2027.
