14 Years Later, Star Wars Finally Brings 1 Part of Its Biggest Cancelled Video Game To the Screen

As a huge Star Wars fan, it really pains me to think about all the projects that never saw the light of day. It wasn’t just movies and TV shows, though. One of the biggest losses, for me, was the video game Star Wars 1313. It would have been incredible – you played as Boba Fett navigating the gritty criminal underworld of Coruscant. It was actually in development back in the early 2010s, and George Lucas was really involved! Sadly, it never came to fruition. When Disney bought Lucasfilm, the project was cancelled, and in April 2013, LucasArts was basically dismantled with massive layoffs, leaving only a tiny team behind. It felt like a real missed opportunity for something truly special.

It’s been over ten years since development began on the video game Star Wars 1313, but fans still remember it fondly. While gamers continue to express disappointment that the game was cancelled, creators working on current Star Wars projects are finding ways to include nods to Star Wars 1313. The Mandalorian and Grogu series, in particular, is filled with Easter eggs and references, including one that directly recalls the cancelled game.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Brings the Droid Gotra to the Big Screen

In the early episodes of The Mandalorian and Grogu, Din Djarin and Grogu visit Nal Hutta to meet with the Twins. When they arrive, they notice droids guarding the area, and Din remarks that the Hutts employ a group called the Droid Gotra. This group is made up of old battle droids from the Clone Wars who now fight for droid rights – similar to the character L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story. It seems they’re also willing to work as mercenaries. The appearance of the Droid Gotra in The Mandalorian and Grogu is a first for live-action; before this, they had only been featured in comics and books.

If you’re only familiar with the Star Wars films and shows, the Droid Gotra—a group of discarded battle droids working as mercenaries—might seem like a new idea. But dedicated fans will remember this concept was originally planned for the unreleased game Star Wars 1313. While details are scarce, it’s likely they would have been similar to what we see in The Mandalorian, perhaps connected to one of Coruscant’s criminal organizations and crossing paths with Boba Fett as he takes on various jobs.

The Droid Gotra featured in The Mandalorian and Grogu shows how George Lucas’s ideas continue to shape Star Wars, even after he stepped away from Lucasfilm. Creators like Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni frequently draw inspiration from his extensive collection of concepts. For example, the animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord was based on Lucas’ original idea for a sequel trilogy that would have made Maul’s criminal organization the main threat. While these ideas haven’t been used exactly as Lucas first imagined them—given how the Star Wars story has evolved—it’s great to see his influence still guiding the creative team behind this beloved universe.

It’s unclear what the future holds for the Droid Gotra after the events of The Mandalorian and Grogu. The film didn’t perform well in theaters, experiencing a significant drop in ticket sales after its initial release. Although it wasn’t a complete failure financially due to the production budget, a sequel seems unlikely. Disney has realized that releasing projects both in theaters and on streaming isn’t very successful, and other Star Wars films, like Star Wars: Starfighter, are set in different time periods. While there are still stories to be told during the New Republic era, it’s difficult to imagine how the Droid Gotra could fit in – unless Grand Admiral Thrawn recruits them to help any remaining Imperial forces. The Mandalorian and Grogu might end up being the Droid Gotra’s only major appearance on screen.
