Retro Shooters, Blog Mysteries, And Vampire Narratives: Kwalee’s Line-Up Is A Love Letter To Gaming’s Versitility

Indie games have become a really exciting part of the gaming world, offering fresh ideas and innovative takes on classic concepts. Platforms like Steam are perfect for discovering these games – you’ll find everything from tributes to older games to completely original, mind-bending experiences and even revamped versions of beloved franchises. A great example of this can be seen in the upcoming games from Kwalee.

Kwalee is showcasing the creativity of indie game development with a diverse range of upcoming titles from various developers. We at ComicBook were among those who previewed three of these games – Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers, SPRAWL Zero, and lily’s world XD. Each one demonstrates the creators’ dedication to originality while honoring the source material that inspired them.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers Is A Must-Play For Disco Elysium Fans

The popular game Vampire: The Masquerade has been adapted into numerous video games, most of which focus on action and horror. However, Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers is different, prioritizing storytelling. Developed by Flyos and taking inspiration from games like Disco Elysium, Eternal Whispers centers around a vampire who wakes up after being imprisoned for decades. Now in modern Montreal, this vampire must uncover their past, understand their purpose, and decide if redemption is possible.

This role-playing game feels more like a story you play than a traditional RPG, emphasizing conversations, relationships with characters, and a plot that changes based on your decisions. Developed since 2023, it’s designed so you never truly ‘lose’ – instead, failures lead to new paths. The game centers around narrative, meaning every choice you make has consequences as you explore Montreal twenty years after the events of the tabletop RPG expansion, “Montreal by Night.” If you enjoy getting lost in a rich story more than quick action, Eternal Whispers is likely to be exactly what you’re looking for.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers does not currently have a release date.

SPRAWL Zero Is The Retro Shooter That Will Make Any Millennial Cheer

Kwalee’s games aren’t just about thinking; they also offer plenty of action. SPRAWL Zero is a fast-paced first-person shooter that intentionally feels like classic FPS games – and that’s a good thing! Inspired by titles such as Halo, Half-Life, and Timesplitters, this game from MAETH is a prequel to their 2023 release, SPRAWL. You play as an agent working for a large corporation, sent in to resolve issues. The demo showcased quick movement and constant combat, with intense firefights happening rapidly as players try to survive while navigating a huge industrial area.

SPRAWL Zero feels like a classic first-person shooter from a bygone era, but with a few smart updates. What really sets it apart is the lack of reloading. When you run out of ammo, you have to ditch your weapon – sometimes even throwing it at enemies – and find a new one. This encourages you to use the game’s bullet time feature and experiment with different guns instead of sticking to just one. With its retro graphics, scoring system, and on-screen display, SPRAWL Zero genuinely feels like a lost gem from that time – and that’s a huge compliment, considering how much love clearly went into capturing the feel of those older games. If you enjoy fast-paced shooters, or if you grew up playing games like F.E.A.R., SPRAWL Zero will definitely bring back some fond memories.

SPRAWL Zero does not currently have a release date. The demo is now available on Steam.

lily’s world XD Is Clever, Meta, And Already Really Creepy

Kwalee’s preview event showcased Lily’s World XD, a unique game that starts as an intriguing mystery and gradually transforms into a disturbing psychological horror experience. Players find an old laptop and discover it belonged to a teenager in 2004, complete with classic apps like AOL Messenger. As they explore the laptop’s files – notes, photos, and documents – they start uncovering clues about a broken friendship and a secretive cult.

The game starts to become truly frightening as the player uncovers increasingly disturbing messages aimed at Lily hidden within photos and songs. These messages sometimes feel directed at the player themselves, adding to the sense of danger. Created by Emily Pitcher, known online as SonderingEmily, lily’s world XD expertly recreates the online experience of 2004 and uses it as the foundation for a chilling murder mystery that grows more unsettling with each clue. The game features challenging puzzles cleverly integrated into the design of the websites and apps, making lily’s world XD a uniquely effective blend of horror and mystery that truly shines as an interactive experience.

lily’s world XD is currently scheduled to be launched on December 31, 2026.
