The Perfect Stargate Replacement Debuted 11 Years Ago (& I’m Still Mad It Got Cancelled)

In the 2010s, cable TV offered a huge range of shows, and science fiction benefited greatly, even having its own dedicated networks like Syfy. Now that streaming is dominant, it’s become obvious that Syfy provided surprisingly good content. The network consistently created shows out of a real passion for the sci-fi genre, even when working with limited budgets.

Back in 2015, Syfy and the Space Channel launched a sci-fi series that immediately grabbed attention with a surprising twist in its first episode. The show ran for three seasons, diving into intricate stories, fascinating world-building, and well-developed characters. It shared similarities with shows like Lost, Firefly, and Battlestar Galactica, but still felt fresh and original. If you didn’t catch it the first time around, now’s a perfect opportunity to give it a watch!

Dark Matter Was Lost Meets BSG

The Syfy series Dark Matter (different from the Apple TV+ show with the same name) centers on six people who wake up with amnesia on a spaceship called the Raza. Frozen in cryosleep, they have no idea who they are. They give themselves numbered names – 1 through 6 – based on when they woke up, and begin to uncover their pasts and how they ended up on the ship. In a surprising twist, the first episode reveals they were actually a notorious group of galactic mercenaries. Now, with no memories, each character struggles to define themselves – embracing a fresh start or confronting their potentially dark history.

Each episode unfolded new details about the characters and their stories, often through flashbacks that completely shifted how viewers understood them and past events. As the series progressed, the characters grew richer and more nuanced – becoming much more compelling than they first appeared, with some undergoing significant development while others experienced moderate growth.

Dark Matter Deserved a Chance to Be the Next Stargate

Many science fiction shows focus on atmosphere and backstory (like Stargate), but Dark Matter immediately explored complex ideas. The first episode cleverly sets up the show’s central themes: what makes us who we are, and whether we can truly improve ourselves when limited by our situations.

The first season of the show was intriguing, but it only lasted two seasons as the story of Dark Matter began to take over. Despite its short run, the show created a rich world with potential for future stories or prequels, and it ended with a major cliffhanger. Unfortunately, not all shows get the chance to continue, but you can currently watch Dark Matter (2015) on The CW’s website. Join the conversation with other fans on the ComicBook Forum!
