Pixar Producer Explains Why A Toy Story TV Show Never Happened

It’s worth remembering that the first movie came out way back in 1995 – over thirty years ago! A lot has changed since then. For perspective, gas was around a dollar a gallon and Coolio’s music was at the top of the charts.

Despite being around for over thirty years, Toy Story has surprisingly never had its own TV show on a network or streaming service.

But why is this happening? This is a hugely successful movie franchise starring Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, and it’s earned an incredible $16 billion when you include things like toys and other merchandise.

So, what gives??

TV Isn’t an Option for Toy Story, And Here’s Why …

Collins acknowledged previous discussions about continuing the story. However, those ideas were very focused and different from what’s being considered now. Ultimately, he believes the driving force is fans’ strong connection to the characters and their wish to see more of the world they know and love.

She explained that they’re open to creating more content, but they’re hesitant. They really want to ensure they have a strong, compelling story before committing to a series. Everyone feels it’s a big challenge – planning a movie is hard enough, let alone something that could last for multiple seasons!

Since a streaming series isn’t going to happen, the next big question is what will happen with the Toy Story movies.

How Many Toy Story Movies Will Pixar Make?

Could Toy Story 5 be the last movie? It’s possible, but not necessarily. Andrew Stanton, who has directed, co-written, and co-created the Toy Story films, recently told ScreenRant that anything is possible. He pointed out that shifting the story’s focus from Andy as a child to Bonnie opens the door for more sequels.

He explained that the idea was always to continue Bonnie’s story and see what happened to the toys, if the opportunity arose. It felt like a show waiting to be renewed for another season – a concept with potential, but not yet confirmed.

He explained that they’ve consistently crafted the endings of their films so they could naturally conclude the story if needed. However, with Toy Story 4, they symbolically passed the leadership role from Woody to Jessie, leaving the possibility open for future installments while still providing a satisfying close.

It sounds as if Woody better invest in that brown marker, after all.

Toy Story 5 has a scheduled playdate in theaters worldwide on June 19, 2026.
