Before Square Enix officially announced the third Final Fantasy 7 Remake game as Revelation, fans were eagerly guessing what the title would be. In a recent Game Informer interview, director Naoki Hamaguchi explained why they chose Final Fantasy 7 Revelation – even though the reveal trailer emphasized the word “Resolve”.
So, I was listening to Hamaguchi talk about the new game, and the big idea he kept coming back to is ‘Resolve.’ He explained it’s about what’s going on inside our characters as they head into the final fights. Like, what are they feeling, what’s motivating them, and what are they thinking about when everything is on the line? He really wants to explore that emotional depth. Apparently, our choices as players will actually impact how that resolve plays out for each character, which is super cool! It sounds like the game will really focus on making us feel connected to the characters and understand what they’re going through.
Hamaguchi explained that the similarity between the titles “Resolve” and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation – both starting with “re” – was purely accidental when questioned about it.
He explained that the title wasn’t initially considered a strong contender. Ultimately, they chose ‘Revelation’ because it best captured the essence of what they wanted to portray in this third game. He added that they kept the title a secret for a long time, being very careful about who knew. Surprisingly, even with a large development team, only five or six people were aware of the title until it was revealed on stage at the Summer Game Fest – that’s where most of the team found out!
Hamaguchi shared that the team chose “Revelation” as the title because the game’s story will focus on answering questions fans still have after playing Remake and Rebirth.
Honestly, as a fan, I think a lot of us were just anxious to see how the story would wrap up, and how the whole trilogy would end. The creators heard that, and they’ve basically said this is it – everything comes to a head here. They promise we’ll finally get all the answers and see how everything connects. It’s like they’re saying this is the big finale!
Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will give players a lot of freedom to explore from the beginning. Once players obtain the Highwind airship, they’ll be able to fly to almost any location in the game world. The developers also shared that the optional WEAPON superbosses will each have their own unique storylines, and the Bone Village area won’t be included in this installment.
The action RPG Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 in Spring 2027.
