ArenaNet, the developer of the upcoming MMORPG Guild Wars 3, has shared its vision for the game. In a recent post on their website, studio head Colin Johanson explained their approach to creating what they call a next-generation MMO. The post also details how the game will be funded through various monetization methods.
One of the biggest features of Guild Wars 3 is that, like the previous games (Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2), it won’t require a subscription fee. According to ArenaNet, they believe players should be able to purchase the game and play however they want. This also means the game won’t use battle passes.
Games like this often make extra money by selling virtual items within the game, but ArenaNet’s Chris Johanson has assured players that Guild Wars 3 won’t allow players to buy advantages. Instead, any items available for purchase will be purely cosmetic – changing how things look – or offer convenience features like account services and ways to save time. Johanson emphasized that, as with previous Guild Wars games, players shouldn’t be able to gain an unfair edge simply by spending money; skill and time invested should be the determining factors.
Many online role-playing games require a huge time commitment, often feeling like a second job. Guild Wars 3 aims to be different by valuing players’ time, a principle that has always been central to the Guild Wars series and is especially important now.
ArenaNet isn’t aiming to make players grind through unwanted tasks. Instead, they want every minute spent playing Guild Wars 2 to feel rewarding, no matter how much or little time people have. They’ll share more specifics about how they’re building this approach into the game in future updates.
Johanson also explained what they mean by calling Guild Wars 3 a “modern MMO.” He pointed out that the first Guild Wars focused on small groups – the player, their companions, and a few other players – while Guild Wars 2 emphasized massive, large-scale experiences in a vast open world. Guild Wars 3 aims to strike a balance between these two approaches.
Johanson explained that while the game clearly qualifies as an MMORPG more than Guild Wars Reforged, it deliberately avoids copying the core features that make Guild Wars 2 special. This approach allows all three games to offer distinct experiences, each with its own story and timeline within the world of Tyria.
Earlier this month, ArenaNet announced Guild Wars 3 with a cinematic trailer. While we didn’t see much actual gameplay, the trailer highlighted that the game will feature the popular mount system from Guild Wars 2. The game is planned for release on PC and PlayStation 5, though a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet. Beta testing is scheduled to begin in Fall 2027.
