Nintendo Switch System Update Brings Improvements to eShop Experience

Nintendo is working to get more people using its newest console, the Switch 2, but it’s still supporting older models too. A recent update for the original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED includes a fresh new look for the eShop.

The eShop has a fresh new look that now adapts to your preferred color scheme, but only if you’re using the “Basic Dark” theme. We’ve also added an extra layer of security: you can now use a User-Verification PIN to access the eShop and manage your saved payment information. Plus, we’ve made several other improvements to make things easier to use. For example, while watching videos in full-screen mode in the eShop or News section, you can quickly skip ahead or rewind 10 seconds by pressing the ZL and ZR buttons.

The Nintendo eShop is now much faster and more responsive. It used to open as a webpage within the Switch’s browser, which was slow to load. Now, it’s been rebuilt as a dedicated app, making it work more like the eShop on the newer Switch 2 console.

Honestly, I wasn’t too surprised to see the eShop getting updates – Nintendo’s still been dropping new games for the older console, which is awesome. I’m super excited about Rhythm Heaven Groove coming on July 2nd! It’s been a while since a new Rhythm Heaven game – the last one, Rhythm Heaven Megamix, was on the 3DS back in 2016. And it’s cool to see other companies getting involved too – Frostpunk, that city-building game, is also coming to the platform!

The Nintendo Switch continues to be a huge success. Nintendo recently announced that they’ve sold nearly 156 million consoles total, including 550,000 in the last three months. Game sales were also strong, with almost 28 million units sold during that same period.

The Nintendo Switch 2 continues to be a strong seller, with nearly 20 million units sold by March 31st. The last quarter saw sales of 2.49 million units, and a total of 10.78 million Switch 2 games have been purchased. Despite this success, Nintendo has revised its sales predictions downward for the fiscal year 2027.

As a big Nintendo fan, I’ve been following the Switch 2’s launch closely. It seems like most people bought it right away, more so than with past Nintendo consoles. Because of those strong initial sales and a price adjustment, analysts are predicting sales will dip a bit next year. But even with that expected drop, they think the Switch 2 is still selling really well for a console in its second year – which is awesome to hear!

The Switch 2 is expected to keep selling well, even with a price increase starting September 1st. It will cost $499.99 in the US, $679.99 in Canada, and €499.99 in Europe.
