Cartoon Network has found a lot of success recently by bringing back popular shows like Adventure Time: Side Quests and The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball. Following this trend, Regular Show: The Lost Tapes – which reunited the original creators and characters – has also become a hit. Interestingly, one of the voice actors revealed in a recent interview that working on the revival allowed him to express frustrations he had while previously working at Disney.
Sam Marin is currently known as the voice of Benson in Regular Show: The Lost Tapes, but he has a background in animation. Before joining the show, he worked as an animator on Disney films like Bolt, The Princess and the Frog, and Tangled. In a recent interview on the Mad Props podcast, Marin shared that voicing Benson was a way to release his frustrations with working in CG animation at Disney. He explained that he wasn’t enjoying computer animation at the time and found it therapeutic to ‘yell as Benson.’ You can listen to the full interview here.
Benson’s New Role
“Regular Show: The Lost Tapes” isn’t just a typical spin-off; it’s really pushing boundaries with its storytelling. The show jumps around in time, showing events from before, during, and after the original “Regular Show.” We’ve already seen glimpses of Pops’ afterlife, early adventures of Mordecai and Rigby, and stories set whenever they fit best. Plus, the series is giving us new insights into the backstories of characters like Benson.
In an unexpected turn of events, Benson was fired from his hair metal band, “Hair to the Throne,” largely because of the strict schedule he imposed on everyone else. Now stranded in a park, he reapplies for his familiar job managing the usually chaotic environment. Thankfully, most of the original voice actors are back – including Marin as Benson – who flawlessly resumes berating his employees and cleaning up after their outlandish plans. The new spin-off, Regular Show: The Lost Tapes, will have multiple episodes, with some already streaming on HBO Max.
