Ratatouille Star is Open to Sequel For Beloved Pixar Hit (But Only For the Right Reasons)

Pixar is famous for creating original films that audiences adore, and many have gone on to have successful sequels. While some of their biggest hits are follow-up movies – like the upcoming Toy Story 5, which is expected to be a major success – Pixar doesn’t make sequels for every film. Several of their most popular titles have remained one-time stories for many years. Ratatouille, the 2007 hit, is a prime example. Actor Patton Oswalt has said he’d be willing to reprise his role if a sequel were made, but only if it was a compelling story.

Patton Oswalt, in an interview with The Daily Beast, explained what it would take to get him on board for a Ratatouille 2. He pointed to the making of The Incredibles sequel, saying it only happened when director Brad Bird discovered a compelling story. Oswalt wants the same for Ratatouille: a genuinely inspired idea that can’t be ignored, rather than a sequel forced through brainstorming sessions. He believes movies developed that way often feel unnatural.

He explained that he wants the next movie to feel different in terms of genre, but maintain the exciting, immersive quality of films like Terminator 2 and Aliens. He emphasized that they want to expand on the story in a meaningful way, and that this isn’t simply about making money. While acknowledging they certainly intend to be successful financially, he stated they plan to achieve that success by telling a compelling and surprisingly complex story with new layers and unexpected depth.

Patton Oswalt Has the Right Mindset Regarding a Ratatouille Sequel

A sequel to Ratatouille would likely be popular, as the original film is still beloved by fans and was a huge hit, earning over $623 million worldwide and winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. However, Patton Oswalt is right to be cautious – any follow-up needs a compelling story, which could be difficult to create. Ratatouille already has a complete and satisfying ending, with Remy achieving his dream of opening a restaurant, and doesn’t really require a continuation. It works perfectly well as a single, self-contained film.

Pixar is known for not making sequels unless they have a really good story to tell. They take their time – often years – to develop a strong narrative before moving forward with a new film. For example, Toy Story 5 is coming out seven years after Toy Story 4, which is actually a relatively quick turnaround for Pixar. The gap between Finding Nemo and Finding Dory was thirteen years, and it took fourteen years for Incredibles 2 to be released. This careful approach means fans can be confident that if Pixar ever makes Ratatouille 2, it will be a worthy sequel. They could have easily made it sooner for a profit, but they prioritize protecting the quality and legacy of the original film.

As fun as it would be to see Remy working the kitchen again, fans shouldn’t hold their breath for a Ratatouille 2 any time soon. Pixar has a full slate of projects it’s working on, including sequels Incredibles 3, Coco 2, and a new installment in the Monsters, Inc. franchise. On top of that, the studio has also announced new original titles Ono Ghost Market and a musical. That’s a pretty full plate, and considering how long it takes to complete an animated movie, the hard-working people at Pixar may not have time to add another project to their lineup right now. If Ratatouille 2 was imminent or at least in some stage of development, we would probably know about it by now.

While a sequel to Ratatouille is possible, it’s worth considering that not every film needs one. Pixar’s Toy Story naturally allows for stories about growing up, The Incredibles is built for continuing adventures as a superhero family, and Inside Out can explore emotions at different ages. Ratatouille, however, doesn’t easily lend itself to a follow-up story that feels natural, and might be best left as a single, complete film.
