It looks like Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is still set to launch on July 9th for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Ubisoft announced that the game has ‘gone gold,’ meaning development is finished and copies have been sent to Sony and Microsoft for final checks before release.
A remake of the popular game Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is in development, currently titled Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. The original Black Flag was first released in 2013 for various consoles and PC. The game tells the story of Edward Kenway, a pirate caught up in the conflict between Assassins and Templars, set during the Golden Age of Piracy. Players will encounter famous historical figures like Blackbeard throughout the adventure.
The upcoming remake of Black Flag will feature significantly improved graphics and gameplay, thanks to being built with Ubisoft’s latest game engine. Design director Julian Koch recently confirmed it’s a full remake and described it as a tribute to the original game.
The developers have been focusing on improving several gameplay features, with parkour receiving significant attention. This led to some unexpected complications, including needing to refine how the game handles collisions. Adding a crouching ability also proved tricky, as it wasn’t part of the original design for Black Flag.
We’re updating how the player character moves and interacts with the environment – specifically crouching and adding finer details. This means adjustments to parkour movements and a complete overhaul of the game’s collision system. The core gameplay and design remain the same, but we’ve rebuilt everything from scratch to take advantage of these new features and tools.
According to creative director Paul Fu, even with the updates, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced still feels like a traditional Assassin’s Creed game.
We didn’t really alter much of the original concept. We mostly expanded upon it. We considered things like adding dialogue options or turning it into a role-playing game, but ultimately decided against those changes. We wanted to keep the focus on action and adventure.
When the team developed a new idea for the game, they sought advice from Jean Guesdon, who was the creative director on Black Flag. He’s now Head of Content for the franchise at Vantage Studios.
Fu explained that maintaining the game’s core identity was a central focus throughout development, particularly when the project was first being planned. They developed specific rules for each team – including those responsible for level design and art – to ensure everything felt genuine and true to the game’s original vision.
One of the most significant updates in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is that it removes all of the portions set in the present day, streamlining the experience compared to the original Black Flag.
Get ready to become a hero in the golden world of Assassin’s Creed! The launch date, July 9th, is almost here – are you excited to begin your adventure? 🤚 #AssassinsCreed
