Hannibal Lecter is arguably the most memorable movie villain of all time. What made him so different was the contrast between his horrific crimes – he was a cannibalistic murderer – and his refined, polite demeanor. He used his background as a psychiatrist to expertly manipulate and unsettle those around him. Even with many terrifying villains in the thriller genre, Hannibal Lecter remains unmatched in his impact and enduring appeal, as demonstrated by the continued success of films and TV shows featuring the character.
I’ll never forget seeing Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs – it was absolutely chilling, and he won an Oscar despite being on screen for such a short time! When I heard they were doing a Hannibal TV series, I couldn’t picture anyone else in the role, but Mads Mikkelsen really blew me away with his take on the character. It’s easy to think of Hopkins as the definitive Lecter, but it’s fascinating to learn he wasn’t even the first actor to play the part – someone else actually portrayed him in a movie back in 1986, before The Silence of the Lambs came out!
Hannibal Lecter first appeared in Thomas Harris’s 1981 novel, Red Dragon. Though later adapted as a film also called Red Dragon, his very first on-screen appearance was in the movie Manhunter. Manhunter introduces several key characters from the Hannibal Lecter series, including Will Graham, who is brought back into service to hunt a serial killer and ends up confronting Lecter while he’s imprisoned. While Manhunter didn’t receive as much attention as The Silence of the Lambs, it’s considered essential viewing for fans and a newly remastered version will be shown in theaters next month.
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the film Manhunter has been restored in stunning 4K resolution and is now being released as Manhunter: The Final Cut. This new version focuses on enhancing the depth, sound, and overall clarity to provide a modern audience with the same intense experience it offered viewers four decades ago. Director Michael Mann told IndieWire he aimed for storytelling that would fully immerse audiences in a state of suspense and emotional connection. Brian Cox, known for his role in Succession, delivers a chilling performance as Lecter, perfectly establishing the character’s enduring impact.
How Manhunter Set Up Hannibal’s Legacy
When Manhunter came out, most movie serial killers were portrayed as exaggerated and monstrous figures. Brian Cox’s performance was groundbreaking because he based his character on real-life killers, moving away from the typical cartoonish villains. The scene where Will Graham first meets him in his cell is incredibly tense – a technique that was later expanded upon in The Silence of the Lambs during Clarice Starling’s visit with Lecter. Although each actor who has played Lecter brings something unique to the role, Manhunter originally defined key elements of his character and established what makes him so memorable.
While The Silence of the Lambs doesn’t mention the earlier film Manhunter, and the actors who played Hannibal Lecter – Brian Cox and Anthony Hopkins – never discussed their interpretations, Manhunter first established Lecter’s chillingly calm personality. Hopkins then drew inspiration from the emotionless HAL 9000 computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey to further emphasize Lecter’s inhuman qualities. Interestingly, the Hannibal TV series paid homage to Manhunter with a direct reference: a scene where Cox’s Lecter criticizes Will Graham’s cologne (“atrocious…with a ship on the bottle”) is almost identically recreated in the show, complete with Graham’s reply about receiving it as a Christmas gift.
The film features several references to previous works, and though you don’t need to have seen the TV show to enjoy it, those familiar with the Hannibal Lecter story will definitely want to check it out – it’s an early look at the character and how his story developed. Despite being an older movie, Manhunter still holds up well with critics, currently boasting a 90% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It received mixed reviews when it first came out, but has since gained popularity. Manhunter will be back in US cinemas on July 24th, and UK audiences can see it from September 25th.
