The First 10 Members of DC’s Outsiders, Ranked by Power

When Batman created the original Outsiders team, he assembled some of DC’s most capable heroes. First appearing in The Brave and the Bold #200 (1983), created by Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo, the team quickly launched their own series, Batman and the Outsiders. Batman formed this new group because he lost faith in the Justice League’s willingness to act when he needed them. Specifically, they wouldn’t intervene in a civil war in Markovia where his friend Lucius Fox was in danger, held captive by Baron Bedlam. Frustrated by their refusal to help rescue an American citizen, Batman created the Outsiders as his primary team.

The team initially featured well-known heroes alongside some newly created characters designed to define the group’s personality. Its first members were Batman, Black Lightning, Katana, Geo-Force, Halo, and Metamorpho. Over time, the roster expanded to ten members, and many of them possessed incredible power – capable of destroying an entire city block before Batman could even reach his Batmobile.

10) Technocrat

Technocrat was a new hero introduced with the second volume of Outsiders in 1993, created by Mike W. Barr and Paul Pelletier. Geoffrey Barron was a wealthy inventor and businessman who traveled to Markovia hoping to sell his Technocrat 2000 battle armor. Instead, he joined the newly reformed Outsiders team, helping them prove their innocence after they were falsely accused of a massacre.

Technocrat isn’t very powerful compared to others because he doesn’t have any natural superpowers. All of his abilities come from the high-tech armor he wears and his own intelligence. He’s an incredibly skilled scientist, especially with cybernetics, but completely depends on his powered exoskeleton—a suit equipped with changeable weapons, electric shocks, and force fields. While similar to Iron Man, Technocrat isn’t nearly as effective in a battle.

9) Atomic Knight

Gardner Grayle is the man behind the Atomic Knight. He initially appeared in Volume 2 of Outsiders, created by Mike W. Barr and Paul Pelletier, but wasn’t looking to join the team. Instead, he was tracking them down, convinced they were criminals after being falsely accused of a terrible crime. The Atomic Knight’s backstory reveals he was driven to fight crime – and initially target the Outsiders – by disturbing visions of a nuclear disaster. This conflict played out over the first five issues of the new Outsiders series.

After a tough battle with Geo-Force that ended in a draw, he realized Geo-Force wasn’t to blame and worked to prove their innocence. He was then officially asked to join the team just before Geo-Force’s wedding. His suit gives him incredible strength, speed, and stamina, and allows him to fire energy blasts, create extreme heat or cold, and even trap enemies in a stasis field. His powerful fight with Geo-Force demonstrated a level of ability that surpasses even Technocrat, despite both of them depending on their armor for power.

8) Faust

Sebastian Faust is the eldest son of DC Comics villain Felix Faust. In a surprising turn of events, when Felix tried to sell Sebastian’s soul to the demon Nebiros, Nebiros instead granted Sebastian magical abilities. He first appeared in Outsiders Vol. 2, issue #1 (written by Mike W. Barr with art by Paul Pelletier), where he joined the team to combat a vampire invasion of Markovia.

Faust practices a type of magic called soul magic, which draws power from the souls of living beings. He’s been able to use this magic his whole life, and can even reveal the spirits of the deceased with a simple touch. While this makes him more powerful than the tech-based members of the Outsiders – who depend on their equipment – his abilities are still less versatile than those of experienced heroes, as his magic is specifically tied to souls.

7) Batman

Batman created the team known as the Outsiders. Although he doesn’t have any superpowers – he’s just a regular human – he’s considered one of DC Comics’ strongest heroes due to his skills and determination. He initially led the team in their first comic series, but eventually left after issue #32 of Batman and the Outsiders (1986).

Though Batman doesn’t have any superpowers himself, he’s fought and held his own against many heroes and villains who do. His greatest asset is careful preparation – he always has a plan for every opponent, no matter how powerful, even including strategies to defeat Superman if necessary. This tactical thinking and real-world experience allow him to consistently overcome opponents with superhuman abilities. However, in terms of raw power alone, he’s still not as strong as the most powerful members of the Outsiders team.

6) Katana

Katana first appeared in 1983 as one of the original members of the Outsiders team. Her debut was in The Brave and the Bold #200, created by Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo. The Outsiders, led by Batman, were heading to Markovia to rescue Lucius Fox, but Katana had a personal mission: to get revenge on General Karnz, the military leader of Baron Bedlam, who was responsible for her family’s death.

Katana surpasses Batman due to her possession of the Soultaker, a magical sword created in the 14th century by Muramasa. This unique blade imprisons the souls of those it defeats – including her late husband, Maseo, allowing them to still connect. A highly skilled samurai and martial artist, Katana is among DC’s most proficient swordfighters. However, her fighting style relies entirely on close combat, which limits her overall power compared to heroes with more versatile abilities.

5) Looker

Looker is actually Emily Briggs, who used to be a quiet bank teller in Gotham City. She first appeared in Batman and the Outsiders #25 (1985), created by Mike W. Barr and Alan Davis. Her powers developed after she was exposed to a comet. The Outsiders saved her from being trapped in the underground world of Abyssia, where she later became their hero and an important member of the team.

She originally had a wide range of psychic abilities – things like reading minds, moving objects with her mind, sensing history from objects she touched, controlling others’ thoughts, projecting energy blasts, creating protective shields, floating, seeing remotely, and healing quickly. After becoming a vampire during a mission to Markovia (thanks to Prince Roderick), she became even more powerful. Even setting aside her vampire strengths, her impressive psychic abilities already make her one of the strongest members of the Outsiders.

4) Black Lightning

Let me tell you about Black Lightning – a real seasoned pro when it comes to superheroes. Batman recruited him for the Outsiders, and he’s not a newcomer; Jefferson Pierce actually debuted in his own comic book, Black Lightning, way back in 1977, created by Jenny Blake Isabella and Trevor von Eeden. I remember when Batman first brought him on board – it was during the Markovian Crisis in Brave and the Bold #200, to help rescue Lucius Fox. From there, he quickly became a vital part of the team, practically Batman’s second-in-command during the original Outsiders run.

He possesses significant powers, primarily the ability to create and control large quantities of bioelectricity. This allows him to incapacitate or even defeat opponents, and also generate a protective electromagnetic shield. Beyond his electrical abilities, he’s an exceptionally skilled martial artist – one of the best in the DC Universe – which makes him incredibly dangerous in close-quarters combat, complementing his ranged attacks. He is more powerful than Looker due to his capacity for inflicting far greater damage.

3) Halo

Halo first appeared in The Brave and the Bold #200 (1983), created by Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo. Batman found her as a young woman with no memory, wandering in the Markovian woods, and possessing abilities related to light. In reality, she’s an Aurakle – an ancient being of energy – who inhabited the body of Violet Harper after Harper’s death. This process gave Violet a new life, powers, and personality.

She possesses the ability to generate auras in seven different colors, each with unique properties. Red emits scorching heat beams, orange delivers powerful blasts, yellow creates intense light that blinds opponents, green freezes targets with stasis beams, blue projects holographic illusions, indigo pulls objects towards her like a tractor beam, and violet enhances mental abilities or empowers others. This versatile range of powers—seven in total—makes her more formidable than Black Lightning.

2) Geo-Force

Geo-Force became an ally of Batman after they worked together on a mission to Markovia. Originally Prince Brion Markov of Markovia, he gained the ability to control earth through an experiment – all in an effort to prevent Baron Bedlam from taking over the country. He was a founding member of the Outsiders, first appearing with the team in The Brave and the Bold #200 (1983), created by Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo. During both initial versions of the team, Geo-Force served as one of its main powerhouses.

He has incredible control over earth and rock. He can create earthquakes, volcanoes, and shoot lava, as well as build tunnels underground and even change gravity for himself and those around him. While he’s the strongest member of the team, one person still possesses greater overall metahuman power.

1) Metamorpho

Rex Mason first appeared in The Brave and the Bold #57 in 1965, created by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon. Because he was a trusted ally of Batman for many years, Batman naturally asked for his help when forming the Outsiders. Rex readily joined the team, even agreeing to a mission that the Justice League considered too delicate due to political concerns. He eventually became the most powerful member of the group.

I’ve been a huge fan of Metamorpho for years, and what’s amazing about him is how he got his powers. It all started with an ancient meteor and this thing called the Orb of Ra. Basically, it changed him so he can turn his body into any element you find in a person – oxygen, carbon, you name it! He doesn’t just change into elements though, he can reshape himself into anything, seriously anything – I’ve seen him become a fully functional tank engine and even a rain cloud! It’s like he’s a walking, talking chemistry set. Honestly, among the Outsiders, he’s on another level – I truly believe he’s the most powerful member of the team. No one else can do what he does.
