One of the Best Sci-Fi Action Films of the 1980s is Back With a New Release 45 Years Later

As a huge fan of 80s action flicks, there’s one movie that always stands out: Escape From New York. Released in 1981, it’s a sci-fi masterpiece co-written and directed by John Carpenter, and it really cemented Kurt Russell as an action star with his role as Snake Plissken. The story drops you into a dark, future 1997 where Manhattan is a giant prison, the President’s been captured by rebels, and Snake has just 24 hours to save him. While the sequel, Escape From L.A., didn’t quite live up to the original, the first film is a true classic. And now, I’m excited to revisit that gritty, dystopian world with a brand-new comic book!

Mad Cave Studios will release a new comic series, Escape From New York: Escape From Chicago, on September 23rd. This series continues the story of the classic 1981 film, building on its established world. Written by Kyle Higgins, known for his work on Radiant Black and No One, with art by Val Rodrigues of The Pale Knight, the comic gives Snake another opportunity to find redemption.

Mad Cave describes this story as a one-way trip—unless you’re Snake Plissken! Now living as a smuggler in the dangerous areas between prison cities like Chicago, Plissken helps people and contraband cross the border. It’s a tough life, but when he’s asked to rescue a woman the city’s ruler wants, Snake hopes for a shot at redemption—or expects another brutal defeat.

The New Escape From New York Comic Comes at a Very Interesting Time For the Franchise

The recent announcement of Escape From New York: Escape From Chicago is notable because of when it happened. StudioCanal first mentioned a reboot of Escape From New York in April, and while details are still scarce, it seems this will be a complete restart of the story. This likely means Kurt Russell won’t reprise his famous role as Snake Plissken. While it’s always tough when a star doesn’t return for a reboot, Russell is so strongly associated with the character that even the artwork for an upcoming comic book series clearly resembles him.

The important thing is that the cover art for Escape From New York: Escape From Chicago isn’t a perfect match to Kurt Russell’s Snake Plissken. This subtle difference could allow audiences to imagine another actor in the role, focusing on the character himself rather than being tied to the original performer. That would be great news for the remake and also give fans something fresh to get excited about as more details are revealed.

The first issue of Escape From Chicago, a spin-off of Escape From New York, will be available for purchase on September 23rd from Mad Cave Studios. Comic shops need to place their orders by August 24th.
