For many kids growing up in the 1980s and 90s, Fox Kids defined Saturday morning television. While the network was known for its cartoons, some of its live-action shows have proven to be even more memorable over the years. 7). Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation
Looking back, Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation is a really unusual show. It’s the only live-action TV series ever made for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and it’s easy to see why it only lasted one season. Picking up after the third movie, the show introduces a new turtle sister, Venus, and features a more mature team facing off against a new set of dragon-themed villains, taking the action in a different direction.
Most people probably remember this show best for its funny crossover episode with Power Rangers in Space, called “Shell Shocked,” but it was quite costly to produce. 6). Masked Rider
Saban Entertainment produced a lot of the shows featured here. After the popularity of Power Rangers, Saban brought over more classic Japanese action shows for American viewers. Masked Rider is based on Kamen Rider Black RX, but it’s quite different from Power Rangers. You might remember Dex appearing in a Power Rangers episode, but he’s actually an alien who ends up living with a funny human family – and his robot companion, Ferbus!
Dex was a superhero sent to Earth to protect it from an evil enemy, but much of the show focused on him learning about human culture and finding his purpose. It was far more quirky and humorous than Power Rangers, but unfortunately didn’t become very popular—only 40 episodes were made, partly because the related toys didn’t sell well. As a result, it’s difficult to find online now.
5). Big Bad Beetleborgs
Big Bad Beetleborgs stands out as the most popular superhero show from Fox Kids that wasn’t Power Rangers, largely because it took a unique approach. It felt more like a comedy centered around kids who were heroes, and cleverly used footage from two different Japanese series—Juukou B-Fighter and B-Fighter Kabuto—by presenting them as separate seasons. The show was full of fun adventures with real challenges, but you could easily pick up the story even if you skipped an episode.
What really made this one special was its ability to capture the same fun spirit as Power Rangers, with engaging stories, villains who mirrored those powers, and a cast of humorous horror monsters. Plus, you can now watch it for free on Tubi!
4). Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog
You might not recall Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog. Unlike shows like Power Rangers, it wasn’t based on a Japanese series—it was an original creation. The show drew inspiration from Japanese action shows and Irish mythology, and it ran for a full 50 episodes, telling a complete story. Like Power Rangers, each episode featured a new monster, but Mystic Knights also consistently built upon its own unique mythology.
Rohan is a young orphan training to become a knight, and he has a special sword with fire powers. He teams up with others who control magical weapons and armor based on different elements – including another elemental knight who joins the group later. Together, they battle monsters in exciting adventures that were much more impressive than anything available for kids to watch back then. Unfortunately, it’s now largely unknown and isn’t available on any streaming services.
3). Eerie, Indiana
Eerie, Indiana has an unusual history. Unlike most shows on Fox Kids, it first aired on NBC. Although it only lasted 19 episodes initially, it became very popular when it moved to the Fox Kids lineup. Because of this, many people associate the show directly with Fox Kids. Its success even led to a spin-off series.
This show was remarkably innovative for its time. It centers around a child who relocates to a strange town and quickly encounters bizarre events – from a tornado hunter to a Bigfoot sighting, and many other creative storylines. It was perhaps too unique for its time and didn’t gain widespread popularity beyond its original run on Fox Kids. You can now watch it for free on Tubi.
2). Goosebumps
Beyond the biggest hits, one franchise really stood out on Fox Kids: Goosebumps. Based on R.L. Stine’s popular books, Scholastic created a kids’ show that many still remember fondly. Each episode expertly mixed genuine scares with just the right amount of silliness, making it perfect for Saturday morning television.
The show really brought so many great stories to life, and the episodes were different enough from the books that they were memorable in their own way. Episodes like Night of the Living Dummy and The Haunted Mask became TV classics, and arguably, people remember them more for the show than the original stories. It felt completely new and exciting.
1). Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
