Netflix Officially Cancels Its Best Stranger Things Replacement After 1 Season

The fate of The Boroughs has been decided.

This science-fiction series centers around residents of a retirement community who uncover a dangerous supernatural threat and a hidden conspiracy. Because of its story and the involvement of executive producers Matt and Ross Duffer, many viewers have compared it to Stranger Things. Critics loved The Boroughs, giving it a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences generally enjoyed it too, with a score of 79%.

Even though viewers enjoyed it, Netflix has canceled The Boroughs, according to Deadline. This happened even though writers were already working on season 2, and the actors were discussing coming back. Plans were even being made to film both seasons 2 and 3 at the same time, as the show’s creators, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, had envisioned a three-season arc.

Netflix likely cancelled The Boroughs because of declining viewership. The show started with 5.6 million views in its first weekend and climbed to 9.5 million in its first week. However, views dropped sharply to 3.7 million during its second week. Considering the first season premiered on May 21st, Netflix made the cancellation decision in less than a month.

Recent releases from the creators of Stranger Things may have impacted streaming numbers. Stranger Things ended with its fifth season in late 2025, and before The Boroughs arrived, they released Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen on March 26th and Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 on April 23rd. Because Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen was a limited series, Tales from ’85 is now their only continuing project on Netflix, as they’ve moved to a deal with Paramount.

The show The Boroughs featured a large and well-known cast – including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, and many other talented actors – and, as a science-fiction series, was likely expensive to produce. These factors probably contributed to its cancellation.

Although the main storyline of season 1 concluded, The Boroughs finished with a major unresolved plot point. The creators, Addiss and Matthews, had also planned to reveal more about the show’s fantastical creatures and overall story in future seasons, but those answers will now remain unknown.

Addiss and Matthews’ show, The Boroughs, has been canceled by Netflix after just one season – making it their second series to face this fate, following Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. While both shows received positive reviews, Dark Crystal lasted longer before being officially cancelled; the news wasn’t announced until September 21, 2020, over a year after its August 30, 2019 release.
